Story by SkinnyKennysPhotos:
The weather was cool and a little damp feeling on Sunday night August 30th in Findlay, Ohio. The racing at Millstream Speedway was definately hot!! The track had held only one race this season and sat idle since Speedweek. Promoter Dean Miracle partnered up with Greg Rowe and re-opened Millstream Speedway. The nights racing events featured 410 sprints, 305 sprints, and a stock car vs. truck race.
The 305 sprint cars were the first class in line to take on the high banked dirt oval. Travis Hoffbauer and Josh Muntz started the race on the front row and led the cars to the green. 5th place starter Paul Weaver quickly worked his way around everyone else and into the front position. A red flag brought the race to a halt when Todd Heuisman tipped his #18 sprinter onto it's side. When the track was cleared and the race restarted, Weaver used his experience to drive a clean race and earn the win. Josh Muntz finished in 2nd followed by Hoffbauer in 3rd. The 305 sprint heat race wins were recorded by Heuisman and Paige Polyak.
The fans stood in excitement while the 20 cars of 410 super sprints pulled onto the racing surface and got in line. Tim Shaffer, Chad Kemenah, Randy Hannigan, and Rob Chaney were just a few of the high caliber drivers in this race and they made up the front two rows. Shaffer rocketed into the lead as the race started and was a favorite to win. Just 4 laps into the race, Kemenah seemed to be catching the leader when Shaffer's car lost power and coasted to a stop on the track. Shaffer would join Hannigan, Butch Schroeder, and Jack Sodeman Jr. in the pits and not return. Kemenah was now the leader with Brandon Wimmer and Greg Wilson in tow. As the race got back underway, Brock Mayes worked his way past Rob Chaney and began to catch Wilson. Another caution flag bunched the cars back together with Kemenah still leading Wimmer, Wilson, and Mayes. As the leaders took the green flag again, Wilson got a great run down the back straight and put a slide job on Wimmer while going into turns 3 & 4. Mayes had a perfect view of Wilson's pass and made the same move around Wimmer in the next corner. Kemenah was setting a super fast pace and it didn't take long before he would encounter lap traffic. Wilson followed in the 2nd spot for a few laps until Kemenah caught a lapped car on the wrong spot of the track. Then Wilson pounced on Kemenah and stole the front position. The race would stay green till the finish with the local "kid" Greg Wilson taking the $3000 win. Kemenah held on to finish 2nd and Mayes rounded out the top three. As Greg Wilson came down the front straight towards victory lane, you could hear him hoot and hollar in excitement. When he stopped the car and climbed out, he immediately climbed up on the top wing of his sprint car and pumped his fists in the air to the delite of his hometown fans. Wilson was soon joined in victory lane by his girlfriend and baby daughter. The sprint car heat wins went to Wilson, Chris Andrews, and Phil Gressman earlier in the evening. Butch Schroeder scored the b-main win.
The last race of the night was referred to as "strucks." The Limaland type stock cars and the Fremont type v8 trucks were put into the same class to race together. Tony Anderson was a Millstream stock car champion back in the early 90s and had just earned another Limaland stock car championship on Saturday night. Anderson would have a pole starting position for the strucks feature with the truck of Alex Wiechman beside him. When the racing got underway, Anderson ripped into the lead. The race soon turned into what seemed like a marathon with alot of crashes and "strucks" breaking down causing many yellow flags. As a matter of fact, the only time any driver could get near Anderson was during the caution laps. On each and every restart, Anderson quickly powered away and left the rest of the racers in the dust. He would lead every lap of the race and score an easy win. Dan Hennig had a great run in his truck to finish 2nd while Art Ball drove his truck into a 3rd place finish after starting the race in 8th position. The "struck" heat races were won by Mike Kruger, Hennig, and Anderson.
Dean Miracle and Greg Rowe would like to thank all of the racers and fans who showed up and helped make the races at Millstream Speedway a success. The partners are planning to run 2 more races at Millstream Speedway before this season ends. Tenative race dates will be September 20th and October 4th. More information will be released when available.
