In celebration of the 50th year of USAC Silver Crown Champ Car racing in 2020, we are reviewing the past 49 years of series history.

1992 USAC SILVER CROWN SEASON REVIEW

“I thought it was over.”

That was Steve Butler’s comment when asked about his late-race confrontation with Jimmy Sills’ spinning car at Eldora Speedway on October 4.

Butler was referring to the battle for the 1992 Valvoline USAC Silver Crown championship and his dilemma on the 41st lap of the 4-Crown Nationals series finale at Eldora.

“I remember bouncing off three different cars,” he recalls.* “Then, after I got through, the engine stalled.* I popped the clutch quickly and somehow it caught, and I kept going.* I guess some days everything goes right.”

The entire day appeared to be drawn from a Hollywood script, with Butler emerging as the hero in a dramatic duel with Jeff Swindell.* Butler finished the season with a seven-point margin of victory, the closest in the history of the series to that point.

“I didn’t know I’d won the championship until I pulled into victory lane.* I was happy we’d won the race and the $10,000 first prize was great, but the title was an added bonus.* It was gratifying to close it out with a win,” Butler added, referring to his 1988 Silver Crown championship, which came without the aid of a victory.

Butler started on the pole at Eldora after qualifying fastest one week earlier before the rain fell.* He then proceeded to lead the first seven laps when racing resumed the following week.

“Jeff got by me on lap eight and I just tried to keep the pressure on him.* I had several opportunities to make a run at him, but I sure didn’t want to get together with him and take a chance of spinning him out.”

Johnny Parsons finally got past both on a restart on lap 28 and led until Sills’ misfortune on lap 41.

“J.P. and I were among the cars that got squeezed into one lane, and unfortunately, he got into the wall,” Butler added.* “We were luckier, I guess, but it could have been us just as easily.”

I owe a lot of thanks to (car owners) Kenny and Mary Jarrett for sticking with me since 1985.* We’ve been through good and bad and this year was pretty good.* The big difference was my chief mechanic, Phil Poor.* He turned this team around.* In the past, we’ve had trouble running all day, but the car never missed a beat this year.* We had a lot of great help and it takes a lot of dedicated help to put together a championship in this very competitive series.”

Butler thinks tire selection during the red flag period after Russ Gamester’s lap 28 accident made the difference at Eldora.

“We did just the opposite of what Jeff did, thinking that if we both ran equal the rest of the way, he’d probably win the title.”

The gamble paid off as Butler ended up in victory lane while Swindell slipped to fifth in the final four laps.* Swindell was running third with four laps remaining, which would have been good enough for the championship, but in the final four laps, Tray House and Tony Stewart sealed his doom.

The USAC Silver Crown Rookie of the Year for 1992 was awarded to two-time winner Jim Keeker.* Tony Elliott, meanwhile, took home Most Improved Driver honors.

KEEKER CLAIMS COPPER WORLD SILVER CROWN RACE

Avondale, Arizona………Jim Keeker of Cicero, Ind., one of only three drivers to win both a USAC Sprint and Midget race in 1991, scored his first Valvoline USAC Silver Crown race victory on February 2 at Phoenix International Raceway.

Keeker’s triumph in the 50-mile Skoal Bandit Racing Copper World Classic event was worth $12,698 to his Six-R Racing Team.

Keeker started seventh in the 30-car field and spent the first 40 miles working his way to the front.* He took the lead from Mike Bliss on the 41st lap and led the rest of the distance.* Bliss, of Milwaukie, Oregon, ended up second in a spirited drive, with Steve Butler of Kokomo, Ind. third, reigning series titlist Jeff Gordon of Pittsboro, Ind. fourth and Wally Pankratz of Orange, Calif. fifth.

Butler outjumped fast qualifier Brad Noffsinger at the start to lead the opening nine laps.* Noffsinger, who turned in a speed of 134.459 mph during time trials on February 1, led the next nine miles, but Butler came back to lead laps 19-33.* Bliss led laps 34-40 and Keeker the rest.

Only one caution flag slowed the competition, for debris in turn one on the third lap.

McSPADDEN GRABS FOYT’S HULMAN HUNDRED

Indianapolis, Indiana………Lealand McSpadden of Tempe, Ariz. led all 100 miles to win A.J. Foyt’s 12th annual True Value Hardware Hulman Hundred on May 22 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

McSpadden won the pole starting spot in the Spies Hecker/Anthony’s Autocraft machine, outqualifying 52 other hopefuls, then paced every lap to beat Jeff Swindell, Jack Hewitt, Brad Noffsinger and Brent Kaeding to the checkered flag.

Hewitt appeared to be closing ground on McSpadden late in the contest but eventually slipped behind Swindell in the final laps.

Gary Hieber, winner of the 1990 Hoosier Hundred at the one-mile dirt oval, won the 15-lap qualifying race and was seventh in the 100-miler.

Greg Staab escaped serious injury when he flipped at the start of the qualifying race.

KEEKER WIRE-TO-WIRE AT IRP’S MELLO YELLO 100

Clermont, Indiana………Jim Keeker scored a wire-to-wire victory in the Mello Yello 100 June 27 at Indianapolis Raceway Park, moving back into the point lead in the Valvoline USAC Silver Crown series.

Keeker led all 100 laps around the .686-mile paved oval in the DuPont Automotive Finishes/Dellen Chevrolet/Six-R Racing Special.

Keeker became the first driver this season to post fast qualifying time and win the feature for an ESPN Saturday Night Thunder race, earning an accumulated $5,600 bonus from the Wynn’s Challenge, bringing his team’s take for the night to a whopping $12,600.

The victory gave Keeker a 40-point lead in the new series standings over Lealand McSpadden, who finished 16th in the qualifying race and was unable to secure a starting spot in the 24-car feature field.

Jack Hewitt won the Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria Qualifying Race.* Johnny Parsons, who won the 1991 IRP Silver Crown 100-lapper, finished second to Keeker, with Jimmy Sills, Mike Bliss and Jim Mahoney rounding out the top-five at the checkered flag.

SILLS DOMINATES TONY BETTENHAUSEN 100 AT SPRINGFIELD

Springfield, Illinois………Jimmy Sills led all 100 miles to win the August 22 Tony Bettenhausen 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.

The win, worth $9,000 to his Consani Racing/Pioneer Concrete team, boosted Sills into the lead of the Valvoline USAC Silver Crown series point standings.

Sills won the pole starting spot in the 30-car field with a qualifying speed of 114.202 mph.* He was followed to the checkered flag by Steve Butler, Jeff Swindell, George Snider and Jack Hewitt.

The race was slowed by only two caution periods.* The first came when Rocky Hodges stalled on the backstretch on lap seven and the last came when Rusty McClure spun and hit the outside wall in turn one on the 57th lap.* McClure was not injured.

Jim Childers and Brent Kaeding captured victories in the two preliminary 10-mile qualifying race events.

RECORD-SETTING Du QUOIN CENTURY TO PARSONS

Du Quoin, Illinois………Johnny Parsons drove the Columbus Container/L.J. Mold/MIG Supply V-6 machine to victory in the Du Quoin Century on Labor Day, September 7, at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds.

The victory was Parsons’ first in Silver Crown competition on a dirt mile and boosted him into fourth in the series points and into title contention.

Parsons established a new one-lap track qualifying mark of 117.963 mph, then set a new 100-mile race record of 107.047 mph in a race slowed by just one caution flag, when Jack Hewitt blew a tire on the 24th lap.

Tony Elliott led the first 22 miles of the race before yielding to Parsons and eventually finished second.* Stan Fox took third, with Tony Stewart fourth and George Snider fifth.

Jimmy Sills retained his lead in the Valvoline USAC Silver Crown series standings despite encountering power steering problems and retiring after just one lap.* He emerged from the race with only an 18-point lead over Steve Butler, who was sixth at Du Quoin. *Jeff Swindell, seventh in the 100-miler, ranks third in the points, just 20 back of the leader.

Chip Thomas and Ron Shuman scored victories in 10-mile preliminary qualifying races.

SHUMAN SETS HOOSIER HUNDRED, SILVER CROWN $$$ RECORDS

Indianapolis, Indiana………Ron Shuman of Mesa, Ariz. captured A.J. Foyt’s 40th Coors Light Hoosier Hundred on September 12 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Starting on the pole in the M & L Plumbing/Marker Trucking/Rasmussen Auto/Beast Special, he emerged from a last-lap tangle with Steve Butler to beat Jeff Swindell and Butler to the checkered flag.

Shuman’s team earned a race-record $23,950 in total prizes from a Silver Crown record purse of $81,100, while Swindell’s team earned $15,850, which included a $10,000 bonus as the champion of the $20,000 Tony George/IMS Point Fund involving both 1992 Valvoline Silver Crown races at the one-mile Indianapolis oval.

Swindell emerged from the race with an 18-point lead over Butler in the Silver Crown standings.

The 100-mile race, which was interrupted by nine caution periods and four red flag incidents, produced spectacular racing, including nine lead changes among four drivers.* Four cars flipped during the program but there were no driver injuries.

USAC Pit Steward Carl McCormick, of Fairfield, Ohio, suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a racecar while assisting in cleanup operation after a spinout on the 34th lap of the race.* McCormick, 56, had served as a USAC Silver Crown steward since 1978.

On the final lap of the race, Butler, who had led 24 miles, attempted to pass Shuman for the lead entering turn three.* The two cars tangled, allowing Swindell to challenge for the win as they raced as a trio toward the finish line.* Jack Hewitt finished fourth, with Tony Elliott fifth.

Pre-race favorites Stan Fox, Lealand McSpadden and Jimmy Sills were each involved in incidents and were non-finishers.* Johnny Parsons, the previous week’s winner at Du Quoin, also failed to finish, retiring with mechanical problems after 47 laps.

BUTLER TAKES ELDORA FINALE AND SILVER CROWN TITLE IN ONE FELL SWOOP

Rossburg, Ohio………Steve Butler of Kokomo, Ind. is the 1992 Valvoline USAC Silver Crown champion, winning the title by the closest margin in history, just seven points, over Jeff Swindell of Memphis, Tenn.

Butler’s $10,000 victory in the 50-lap 4-Crown Nationals finale at Eldora Speedway enabled him to come from 18 points behind to beat Swindell in the final standings.* Butler also won the 1988 Silver Crown title and is a four-time USAC National Sprint Car champ.

Butler won the pole starting position in qualifications on September 25 before rain forced a one-week postponement of the 50-lap feature.* Butler led the first seven laps in his Kenny Jarrett Farms Special before yielding to Swindell.* Swindell led the next 20 laps until Russ Gamester hit the wall and flipped on lap 27.* Gamester was treated at Coldwater, Ohio Community Hospital for a back injury and released.

Johnny Parsons came from third place to lead on the restart and was leading when Jimmy Sills hit the wall in turn one on lap 41.* Parsons and Butler tangled at the site of Sills’ crash, and Parsons’ car hit the outside wall, eliminating him from contention.* Butler then led the final 10 laps for the victory.

Swindell was third on the final restart, a position which would have earned him the series championship, but he slipped to fifth in the closing laps.

Tony Elliott came from 12th starting spot to finish second.
