SYRACUSE SILVER CROWN FINALE OCTOBER 11;

COONS EMERGES WITH “4-CROWN” VICTORY

Only 12 points separate USAC Silver Crown point leaders Kody Swanson and Tracy Hines entering the October 11 series finale at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

Neither was able to win at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio Saturday. The “4-Crown Nationals” victory went to Jerry Coons Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. in the RPM Auto Enterprise DRC/Mopar. Coons emerged with the victory after a post-race check revealed that an unapproved tire change had occurred on the car of original race winner Caleb Armstrong. The one-lap penalty relegated Armstrong to 10th place in the official finish.

Coons won the pole for the 50-lap race and led the first 12 laps. Swanson, aiming for what would have been a fifth series victory this year, grabbed the lead on lap 13 but relinquished it back to Coons for the next six laps. Swanson then took over for 27 laps but succumbed to Armstrong’s charge on lap 47.

Defending race winner Chris Windom officially was credited with second at the checkered flag, followed by Hines, Shane Cockrum and Bobby East. Swanson slipped to ninth at the end.

Drivers Russ Gamester, Dave Darland and Patrick Lawson all escaped injury in separate flips during the Silver Crown action.

The Silver Crown feature was contested Sunday after rains interrupted Saturday night’s event after the Midget heats.

The October 11 Syracuse outing marks USAC’s first Silver Crown race in New York since Brian Tyler’s victory at Oswego in 2009. The last Syracuse Silver Crown race was J.J. Yeley’s victory in 2003.

Seems silly to me . My thought (wich counts for 62 cents if u add 62 cents) is well hey here we r in the pit with a flat tire .... How about we throw on 2 BRAND NEW tires and see how fast this sumbitch will go ! I mean we're already here and we got our tools out!

We should probably be worrying about the car count more than the rule book. They'll be no usac apologists in Syracuse if only 13 cars show up.

This is tied in with super DIRT Week gang. There is lots of good racing all week and weekend. The silver crown is a nice addition regardless of count and the N.Y.fans will be appreciative. Pete g.

Boy would that be a long drive for a rainout.....

But then I think about how many trips Boston Louie Seymour made to the midwest. He wasn't scared!!

Should have been handled different. Yup, break the rules, you should be penilized.

Lack of communcation. USAC could have let the annoucer know that he was being put to the back. My problem is that alot of people left thinking one driver won, when did not.

He had won, until it was brought to attention by other competitors apparently. Usac cant rule something immediately that they didn't see or know until afterwards. And not seeing it doesnt mean u get a free pass if competitors call it out, sucks for Armstrong but usac did right

It would be interesting to see the ones competitors get a engine pulled and see what they have done.I have never heard of usac pulling a engine at track and see what is in it. Just saying I always wondered other than weight what dose usac do on other parts of cars to make sure all winning cars our in line with usac standards.
