After four months and a week of Mel Kenyon Midget Series racing, it will all come down to two pavement races and two dirt races. The series will head to the Lincoln Tech Indianapolis Speedrome this Saturday to celebrate Labor Day weekend on the legendary 1/5 mile paved oval, then returns to US 24 Speedway on September 19 and 26 for the last two dirt races. The series will head back to the paved high banks of Anderson Speedway for USSA’s traditional season finale on October 10
When the teams drive through the pit gate at the Indianapolis Speedrome the series will have its first new point leader since May 9. Kyle O’Gara nabbed the point with a win using a dominating performance on the cushion at US 24 Speedway when mechanical gremlins sidelined the previous point leader Dameron Taylor. O’Gara’s point margin is a tiny 26 points. The remainder of the Mel Kenyon Midget Series point battle is just as closely fought as the race at the top. Ashlea Albertson has opened a 16 point gap on Logan Huggler for the 3rd position, the largest separation the two have seen in nearly six weeks. The last four races will almost certainly stir up the point chart as no driver in the Mel Kenyon Midget Series top 10 has a safe point spread on the driver behind them. If O’Gara and Taylor stumble in several of the last races Albertson and Taylor are within striking distance for the championship. Saturday the Mel Kenyon Midget Series will be joined at the Lincoln Tech Indianapolis Speedrome by the Championship Night events for the Roadrunners, Hornets and Stock Cars on the figure 8. The USSA midgets will contest each other in a 50-lap feature. The spectator gates open at 4:30 with racing scheduled to begin at 7:00. |
