USAC SPRINT CAR SHOWDOWN FRIDAY IN GRANITE CITY

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Granite City, Illinois (August 26, 2019)………Just a little over three months since the series’ last visit, the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship makes its return to Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Illinois this Friday night, August 30, for the Brandt River Town Showdown.

Chris Windom *won the first round of the Showdown at Tri-City back in May, leading the final ten laps to score the victory after starting fifth.* The Canton, Ill. native was a force all night, qualifying second overall and winning his heat from the sixth spot.* The 2016 USAC Silver Crown and 2017 USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car titlist finished sixth in his first appearance there in 2018.

Tyler Courtney, who was fast qualifier twice in a USAC Sprint Car at Tri-City this year, including the rain-abbreviated second night in May, biked and pirouetted against the outside turn four wall while running fourth with seven laps to go in the feature, putting him out for the remainder of the race, resulting in a 14th place finish.* Last Saturday’s Sprint Car Smackdown champ at Kokomo Speedway also won last year’s Labor Day Weekend USAC Sprint show at Tri-City and was victorious in this past May’s USAC Midget round at the 3/8-mile dirt oval.

Carson Short (Marion, Ill.) has one career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car victory back in 2016 at another “Tri” track at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.* He came oh-so-close to picking up his second at Tri-City in May, leading nine laps and finishing second behind Windom after charging from eighth.

Kevin Thomas, Jr. finished third behind Short in May after leading six laps early in the going.* The Cullman, Ala. driver was the fastest qualifier at Tri-City a year ago and was charging hard at the end before coming up just short to Courtney, finishing second.* He’s won once this season on the red clay of Bloomington and is eager to get back to victory lane this Friday.

Chase Stockon started on the outside of the front row and finished eighth in May after leading the first five laps of the feature.* Friday could very well be a milestone night for Fort Branch, Indiana’s Stockon if he starts Friday’s main event.* He made his 284th consecutive USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature start last Saturday at Kokomo, tying the mark set by five-time series champ Levi Jones.* One more would set the new standard, making Stockon the ultimate ironman for the series.

Series point leader C.J. Leary won his heat and took fourth in May’s Sprint feature at Tri-City after charging from ninth.* In 2018 at Tri-City, Leary (Greenfield, Ind.) led the first nine laps before encountering trouble and dropping back to a 20th place finish.* There hasn’t been much trouble from Leary this season with 23 top-ten finishes in 24 series starts, which has helped push him to a 121-point lead in the standings entering Friday’s race.

Isaac Chapple has one top-five coming into Friday, and it came at Tri-City in May where he bolted from the 15th starting spot to finish fifth right at the line on the final lap.* The year prior, in 2018, the Willow Branch, Ind. native captured a heat race triumph and ran 11th in the feature.*

Only Courtney has won more often in USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car competition this year than Brady Bacon, a four-time victor on the trail in 2019.* Bacon (Broken Arrow, Okla.) was ninth in May in the Sprint Car at Tri-City and he also led five laps in that night’s Midget feature.* The two-time USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car champion was third in the USAC Sprint stop at Tri-City in 2018.

Bacon’s Broken Arrow brethren Jason McDougal dropped a driveshaft while hovering around the top-ten in May, ultimately finishing 17th.* The one-time winner in both the USAC National Sprint and Midget divisions this year, McDougal won his heat and finished 18th in his Sprint debut at Tri-City in 2018.

Justin Grant was involved in a second lap accident in May’s go at Tri-City that knocked him out of contention after starting third, finishing 19th in the end.* He took home an eighth-place result in 2018.* In the Midget this past Spring at Tri-City was a better story in which he finished third after starting on the front row.* The Ione, Calif. driver was victorious in last Wednesday’s #GYATK Night USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car special event.

Those individuals and a whole host of others are ready to give Tri-City another try for the 22nd time in series history.* Jay Drake, Jack Hewitt, Danny Smith, Greg Weld and Doug Wolfgang each have scored two victories at Tri-City while Steve Butler, Tyler Courtney, Rick Hood, Kelly Kinser, Ralph Liguori, Troy Rutherford (a Special Event win), Randy Standridge, Tony Stewart, Sammy Swindell, Chris Windom and Josh Wise have one each.

The “River Town Showdown” features complete shows for the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship, USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship and B-Mods on Friday night, August 30, at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Ill.

Registration and pit gates open at 3pm (Central).* Grandstands and ticket office open at 5pm.* Cars on track at 6pm.

Adult general admission tickets are $25 while children 12 and under are FREE.* Reserved Top 2 Rows: $30 for adults, $5 for children 12 & under.* Pit passes are $30 apiece for members and $35 for non-members.

Tri-City Speedway is located at 5100 Nameoki Rd, Granite City, IL 62040.* You can reach the promotion team of Track Enterprises at (217) 764-3200 and Tri-City Speedway at (618) 931-7836.* For more information, visit the Track Enterprises website at http://www.trackenterprises.com/, the series website at http://www.usacracing.com/ and the track website at http://www.tricityspeedway.net/.

Both nights of action will have live, flag-to-flag coverage on FloRacing.com.* You can listen to live audio of the broadcast for free on the USAC app or follow along with live updates on https://www.facebook.com/usacracing/ and https://twitter.com/USACNation/ with live timing and scoring available on both the USAC and Race-Monitor apps.

USAC MIDGETS ROCK GRANITE CITY THIS FRIDAY

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Granite City, Illinois (August 26, 2019)………USAC’s NOS Energy Drink National Midget division has a history with Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Ill. that goes back nearly six decades, dating to Danny Frye’s win in 1961 to Tyler Courtney’s triumph in May of this year.

Yes, the names have changed since then, the cars have changed, and even the track has changed from a half-mile to its current 3/8-mile iteration. But, the spirit, the drive, and the will to win remain the same as it ever has entering this Friday’s Brandt River Town Showdown on Aug. 30, a doubleheader that also features the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship.

Courtney was a dominant force in May’s race at Tri-City where he recorded the fastest lap in qualifying, then took the lead with nine laps remaining to capture the victory, one of a series-leading six this year for the point leader from Indianapolis, Ind. The following night, he was quick time again before the cancellation of the event. He also was victorious in a visit to Tri-City by the USAC Sprint Cars back in 2018.

Clauson/Marshall Racing teammate Chris Windom (Canton, Ill.) was 12th in May but took that night’s USAC Sprint Car portion of the event. This year has been a breakout USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget season for the Silver Crown and National Sprint champ, earning his first two career victories with the series at Lawrenceburg, Ind. and at Pennsylvania’s Grandview Speedway.

No driver has won more USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget races at Tri-City Speedway than has Tanner Thorson. The Minden, Nev. Driver won five-straight between 2015 and 2016, which mark his five most recent appearances at the track after missing May’s race while he was recovering from injuries sustained in a March highway accident. The 2016 series champ won in miraculous fashion in June after starting 15th in the Indiana Midget Week round at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Ind.

Third in points is Logan Seavey, who finished second behind Courtney in May, after leading a race-high 13 laps. The three-time series winner in 2019 and reigning series champion won the series’ most recent race at Lanco in Pennsylvania. Just last Friday, the Sutter, Calif. picked up his first career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car victory on night two of Sprint Car Smackdown VIII at Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway.

Zeb Wise (Angola, Ind.) arrives at Tri-City coming off a recent string of success during Pennsylvania Midget Week in which he scored his first two wins of the season, first at Action Track USA, then again at Linda’s Speedway, both of which came in dramatic fashion. He took fourth in his first trek to Tri-City in May and now resides fourth in the series standings.

Kevin Thomas, Jr. (Cullman, Ala.) rounded out the top-ten in May’s Midget run after leading the initial three laps at Tri-City but has run 2nd and 3rd in his two career USAC Sprint starts in 2018 and 2019, respectively, including leading six laps this year. He’s 10th in the standings with a last-lap victory at Kokomo as his best run of the campaign.

Chad Boat is sixth in the points and took fifth back in May’s event. The Phoenix, Ariz. driver broke through on the first of August for his first win of the season during Pennsylvania Midget Week at Path Valley Speedway Park and aims to close out a month in the same manner, a month in which he’s garnered eight of his nine career series victories.

Aside from Courtney, Jerry Coons, Jr. (Tucson, Ariz.) is the only other driver to reach victory lane in a USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget event at Tri-City Speedway, doing so in 2008. He finished 6th in May, one his 14 top-ten finishes in 21 starts this season, which sees him 7th in the latest standings.

Windom, along with Tanner Carrick (Lincoln, Calif.), Jason McDougal (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Cannon McIntosh (Bixby, Okla.) are a trio of drivers who’ve each earned their first career series victories this season, Carrick in July at Sweet Springs, Mo., McDougal in July at Fairbury, Neb. and McIntosh in March at Du Quoin, Ill. McIntosh led all drivers as a 7th place finisher in May at Tri-City, earning hard charger honors after starting 18th. Meanwhile, Carrick took 13th as McDougal came home with a 17th.

C.J. Leary (Greenfield, Ind.) is one a handful of drivers set to pull double-duty Friday night in both a midget and sprint car. Leary was 8th in May’s midget main and 4th in the sprint A, earning the best average finish among the double-duty set with an average result of 6th.

The “River Town Showdown” features complete shows for the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship, USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship and B-Mods on Friday night, August 30, at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Ill.

Registration and pit gates open at 3pm (Central). Grandstands and ticket office open at 5pm. Cars on track at 6pm.

Adult general admission tickets are $25 while children 12 and under are FREE. Reserved Top 2 Rows: $30 for adults, $5 for children 12 & under. Pit passes are $30 apiece for members and $35 for non-members.

Tri-City Speedway is located at 5100 Nameoki Rd, Granite City, IL 62040. You can reach the promotion team of Track Enterprises at (217) 764-3200 and Tri-City Speedway at (618) 931-7836. USAC DOUBLEHEADER HISTORY COMES ALIVE FRIDAY AT TRI-CITY

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Granite City, Illinois (August 27, 2019)………The USAC doubleheader. An opportunity for a racer to showcase his or her versatile skills in multiple disciplines on one track in a single night. The chance for a rare breed to accomplish what so few individuals have done before them by succeeding and winning in both.

The stage awaits this Friday night, August 30, at Tri-City Speedway for the Brandt River Town Showdown, where both the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midgets and USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Cars occupy the 3/8-mile dirt oval in Granite City, Ill. for a twin bill worth salivating over.

One such event has already been held at Tri-City earlier this year, with Tyler Courtney scoring the Midget portion and Chris Windom capturing the Sprint Car leg of the night. Neither had the same fortune in the other feature that night; Courtney was 14th in the Sprint Car and Windom 12th in the Midget.

Both, as well as handful of others, are highly capable of doubling-up and winning both in one night, including the likes of Windom, Courtney, C.J. Leary, Jason McDougal, Kevin Thomas, Jr. and Zach Daum, just to name a few, this Friday night.

How likely are the odds a driver can win both in a single night? Well, it’s been done before and can, and will, be done again. Is this Friday the night it happens once again when one can stand tall on center stage at the end of the night, claiming sole possession of victory lane for an entire night, their night.

The first such USAC National Midget/National Sprint doubleheader came 43 years ago, in 1976, on the high banks of Eldora Speedway. Dana Carter took the Midget end of the deal while Clark Templeman scored the Sprint Car feature.

While no such USAC National Midget/Sprint sweeps occurred on that night, there have certainly been their fair share of them over the years, 23 to be exact, including last Fall at the 4-Crown Nationals at Eldora by Tyler Courtney.

It wasn't exactly a clean sweep of all USAC events with Courtney not winning the Silver Crown portion, a three-tier sweep which has only been done twice. Kyle Larson not only got the Midget and Sprint glory that particular evening, he also capped off the night with a Silver Crown victory, same as Jack Hewitt did in 1998 at the same event, the only two times in which all three have been “swept” in the same night.

As far as USAC National/Sprint Midget sweeps go, the first one wasn’t so much a sweep, but is recognized as one of the greatest feats in USAC history, at Indiana’s Salem Speedway in 1977. Double features for both the Midgets and Sprint Cars were on tap that Memorial Day afternoon. Pancho Carter nailed down wins in both midget features, won the first Sprint Car feature, and came up just short in the second Sprint A-Main, finishing second to Tom Bigelow.

Ron Shuman did the deed a year later in 1978 at Reading, Pa., an Independence Day event which was televised on NBC. Just two sweeps occurred in the decade of the 1980s with Ken Schrader doubling up at Beaver Dam, Wisc. in 1982 and Rich Vogler getting a two-fer in 1986 at Eldora.

Jeff Gordon’s shooting star was at peak levels in 1990 when he took both on the high banks of Salem in June, then finished up the year with another sweep at the similarly shaped and banked Winchester Speedway in November on his way to superstardom.

National Sprint Car Hall of Famers Hewitt and Dave Steele lead all drivers with three occasions in which they won both a USAC National Midget and National Sprint event at the same locale on the same day. Hewitt got his first right at Tri-City, host of this Friday’s race, in 1991, then did it again in 1997 at Terre Haute, inheriting the Midget win following original winner Kevin Thomas’ car failing post-race technical inspection. Hewitt’s third and final came in the never-to-be-forgotten 4-Crown in 1998.

While Hewitt garnered all three on the dirt, Steele collected all of his three on the pavement, all within a calendar year, first at the one-mile track Nazareth, Pa. in 2003, again on a mile at Pikes Peak International Raceway in 2004, and for the last time, just one month later, at Salem.

USAC Triple Crown champ, and Indy Racing League/NASCAR Cup Series titlist Tony Stewart took two at Eldora in 1995, as did future NHRA star Doug Kalitta in the season-ender at Winchester that same year. Dave Darland cashed in for two at Eldora in 1999.

Jay Drake got the first sweep of the new millennium, in 2001, during the Buckeye Nationals at Eldora, shown on ESPN2. J.J. Yeley added a pair of sweeps to his name within a month in 2002 on the pavement of Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, then again on the dirt at Fremont, Ohio, where he flipped his Sprint Car in turn four while celebrating his big night.

Jerry Coons, Jr. landed both wins at Missouri’s Lake Ozark Speedway in 2006. Bryan Clauson became the youngest to sweep, shortly after turning 17 years old, at Salem in 2006. Larson, meanwhile, became the latest to get both in one night, in 2011 at Eldora.

Doubling-up hasn’t been achieved since Larson eight years ago, but the opportunities haven’t been as prevalent to achieve the feat outside of the 4-Crown since that time. That is, until this year.

One doubleheader at Tri-City has already been held back in May, while four more await both the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midgets and AMSOIL National Sprint Cars, starting this Friday, Aug. 30, at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Ill, followed by Eldora Speedway on Sept. 28 (with USAC Silver Crown), plus a back-to-back nights for the Western World Championships Nov. 15-16 at Arizona Speedway in San Tan Valley, Ariz.
