1969 USAC MIDGET REVIEW: TWO GUN TATTERSALL GETS HIS FIRST

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

After almost 20 years as a race driver, Bob Tattersall, of Streator, Ill. climaxed his career by winning the 1969 USAC National Championship, clinching the title the day after he and his wife Dee celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary.

Tattersall won 11 races on his way to the championship, 10 of which were established in the yellow No. 3 Offenhauser-powered car owned by Jack Stroud of Hazelwood, Mo.* The 11th was earned while driving for Linne.

In 1965, Tattersall finished second to Mike McGreevy in the point standings and was also third in 1968 and fourth in 1962, 1966 and 1967.* But 1969 marked his first full-out effort, to stick with the plan from start to finish night-after-night.

“I never really tried to win the title before this year,” said Tattersall, the crew-cut sporting veteran.* “I used to take the season race by race and try hard to win each one.* If I fell back or I didn't feel competitive, I’d drop out rather than finish sixth or seventh.* But points are paid for every position in the feature, so the higher you finish the more points you make.* If you drop out, or decide to pass up a race or two, you really hurt your chances.”

“Tat” started in no less than 66 features during the busy season, and he returned as the winner on 11 occasions.* Although he led the point standings for much of the season, he was continuously dogged by three-time champion Mel Kenyon, who was attempting to win the championship for the third straight year.

Kenyon seemed well on his way to achieving this in the early part of the year until mechanical problems and two accidents put him at a great disadvantage.* In one accident, Kenyon totaled his brand-new Don Edmunds-built machine, which was among the first cars in the series to utilize a roll cage.

With his primary ride sidelined, Kenyon was forced to take other rides until receiving delivery of another new Edmunds, but it didn’t keep him from victory lane, winning for owner Howard Linne in June at Wisconsin’s Capital Super Speedway.

Bob Hare led the points in the early part of the season through his indoor performances, but subsequently bowed to Gary Bettenhausen.* Gary B’s Champ and Sprint Car activities caused his lead to dwindle and Kenyon moved to the front until his mid-June misfortune.* Tattersall replied by winning three races in four starts and became the point leader on June 20.

Kenyon managed to squeeze by for a single race after winning at Indiana’s Avilla Speedway on July 16, but a victory by Tattersall at Springfield (Ill.) Speedway two nights later put the eventual champion back in front for good.

The season’s entrant champion, Jack Stroud, had been connected to auto racing since the mid-1930s, having started as a driver back in 1936.* He competed in both big cars and motorcycles on flat tracks around Saint Louis, Mo. until moving to the west coast in 1939.* At that time, he started driving midgets under the UMRA banner, which later became URA.

Stroud backed off from his driving in 1951 and quit in 1954.* A charter member of USAC in 1956, Stroud continued as an owner with Red Hamilton driving and later switched to a youthful Bob Wente before hiring Tattersall.

The car that won the championship was known as the Honker II and was the latest in a long line of Honkers.* The Honker was tagged onto a Stroud owned car that Danny Frye drove in 1960.* Since that time, there had been The Little Honker, The Big Honker, The Red Honker, The New Honker, The Other Honker and The Honker II.* The Honker II, built in 1966, was not the same car he used in 1969.* “Actually, it should be the Honker III,” pointed out the mustachioed Stroud.

Two drivers lost their lives in USAC National Midget competition during the 1969 season, John Deering in August at Michigan’s Jackson Motor Speedway as well as Lloyd Nygren in September at California’s San Jose Speedway.

Billy Engelhart of Madison, Wis., seventh in points, was named the first ever USAC National Midget Rookie of the Year.

In what proved to be his final career start at Ohio’s Cincinnati Gardens, Ted Hartley, at age 66, became the oldest driver to record a top-10 USAC National Midget finish, taking sixth in the December’s opener, which also marked the first time that one season encompassed two years.* USAC’s fiscal year started December 1, so, hey, it counts in the books for 1969.

Dave Strickland, third in the standings, set an all-time series record by starting 69 different events in 1969.* Double nice.
