SEAVEY SERVES UP HISTORIC USAC NATIONAL MIDGET SEASON IN ROOKIE CAMPAIGN

It’s one thing to be spectacular in winning the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series championship before the final race of the season. It’s up another level to clinch that title on a last-lap, last-corner pass of a past series champion in Rico Abreu for a late-season feature victory, but that’s just what we became accustomed to seeing out of Logan Seavey in 2018. All that for any driver is a noteworthy amount of success, but to get the job done in your Rookie season is off-the-charts with the competition that surrounds the 21-year-old Sutter, California native. In his first tour of the series, Seavey became just the third driver to win the USAC National Midget championship and be named series Rookie of the Year in the same season, joining Danny Caruthers in 1971 and fellow Keith Kunz Motorsports/Curb-Agajanian hot shoe Christopher Bell in 2013.

It’s been an amazing journey for the quick study who started his first USAC Midget race on Thanksgiving night of 2017. With a National title now in his back pocket, he has reached a stratosphere that few have ever achieved as a USAC National Midget champion.

“It’s pretty dang cool,” Seavey exclaimed. “Not too long ago, I didn’t even have a midget ride. I was just hoping one day to be able to race midgets. Now here we are with the best team in the world and we’re USAC national champions!”

Though the spotlight loomed large for the driver joining the team that had won the previous seven series' owner championships, Seavey didn’t even bat an eye, stepping into the coveted role and, right from the get-go, was seamless, capturing the 2018 season opener indoors at the Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin in just his second career series start.

“Driving the number 67 is pretty iconic,” Seavey acknowledged following the win.* “When you get hired for a job to do, you have to do your job. After the (2018) Chili Bowl, I raised my own expectations a lot. We ran really well, and I got comfortable really quickly. I figured we could win some races if everything fell our way, but I didn’t think this would be the place we’d do it. Everything went our way tonight and that's how it goes sometimes.”

Everything went Seavey's way throughout his initial series' campaign, as he finished in the top-ten on 15 occasions and the top-five 10 times in 17 starts, which was a tall-task for anybody in one of the most balanced seasons in series history, which saw 11 different drivers enter victory lane and nary a repeat winner until July.

After missing the show in the indoor opener at Du Quoin, Tyler Courtney bounced back with a victory in April at the “Kokomo Grand Prix” at Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway. “Indiana Midget Week” kicked off in late May with NASCAR star Kyle Larson sweeping the night at Montpelier Motor Speedway by setting fast time, winning his heat and charging to the front to lead the final 21 laps for the win. Chad Boat shed the label by winning his first race outside the month of August as he closed out May with the win at Lincoln Park Speedway. Spencer Bayston, the 2017 series titlist, stood on top following a thriller at Lawrenceburg. Kevin Thomas, Jr. notched the IMW finale at Kokomo. Bayston captured the overall IMW championship.

In the inaugural “Mid-America Midget Week” at Red Dirt Raceway, Christopher Bell returned to his home state of Oklahoma to earn owner Keith Kunz his 100th USAC National Midget victory. The following night, K. Thomas became the first driver to win twice during the season in the “Chad McDaniel Memorial” at Solomon Valley Raceway in Beloit, Kans. Justin Grant tallied his lone win of the year during the annual stop at Jefferson County Speedway in Fairbury, Neb. Seavey returned to victory lane to close out the tour with a late-race pass for the win in the series’ debut at Missouri’s Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex.

In August, the compasses pointed east for “Pennsylvania Midget Week,” which saw the first two rounds dogged by rain. Once things got going at Lanco’s Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway in Newmanstown, Pa., history was made by Zeb Wise, who returned after a two-month layoff due to a broken collarbone to become the youngest winner in series history.

Meanwhile, in one of the most amazing, unforgettable moments of the year, outside of a Travis Pastrana, Evel Knievel, Joie Chitwood or Tommy Bartlett show, occurred when Seavey put “four on the fence” and literally drove on the chain link, completely horizontal, between turns three and four to avoid the carnage unscathed on his way to a third-place finish. Boat put a stamp on the tour of the Keystone State, winning his first race after returning to the team's black car after shelfing the white car they had been campaigning.

September was the showcase for two of the biggest events on the season calendar – one brand, spanking new, and one event with a rich history. The “BC39” hosted the largest number of cars to ever compete in a USAC National Midget event, with Brady Bacon topping the 110 drivers in attendance to win the first race on the new Dirt Track at IMS. Courtney had a successful night in the “4-Crown Nationals” at Eldora, doubling up with victories in both the Midget and Sprint Car divisions. In October, Tyler Thomas became the first driver, and 14th overall, to win both his first USAC National Midget and National Sprint Car features in a single season since Larson in 2011 when he snared the “Jason Leffler Memorial” at Wayne County Speedway in Wayne City, Illinois.

The yearly western swing took the series to California where Seavey earned his title-clinching victory at Bakersfield Speedway’s “November Classic.” In the 78th running of the “Turkey Night Grand Prix” on Thanksgiving night at Ventura (Calif.) Raceway, it was once again a showcase for the immense talents of Bell and Larson, with Bell getting the upper hand late in the going to become just the third three-time winner of the prestigious race.
