Steve Savage passed away this morning following a battle with cancer.

Stevan Gray Sauvageau
September 05, 1949 - November 19, 2012

Stevan Gray Sauvageau, age 63, of Plainfield, IL, passed away after a long courageous battle with Agent Orange Related leukemia and complications from a stem cell transplant.

Steve is survived by his mother, Helen Gray Sauvageau of Plainfield; his sister, Sue Sauvageau of Seneca Falls, NY; his cousins, Helen (Dwight) Baker of Vero Beach, FL, Jeffrey (Sue) Gray of Palatine, IL, Ray and Michael Sauvageau of MN, and additional relatives and friends. He also leaves his special friend and brother-in-law, Richard (June) Corson of Markham, IL; his step-daughter, Amanda Jaraczewski of CA; his very special companions, Nicole Moya and A.J. Corson; and his dog, Bubba. Steve was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen Corson Sauvageau; his father, Vernie L. Sauvageau; his cousin, Jeanne (Ed) Lessman and his aunts, uncles and grandparents.

Steve was born September 5, 1949 to Helen and Vernie Sauvageau. He spent his youth with neighborhood friends swimming and rambling about the DuPage River. Active in scouting and athletics, always popular with the young ladies, he graduated from Plainfield High School in 1968. 1968 was not a peaceful year, Like his parents before him, Steve joined the Navy and shipped out to Vietnam, where he served on the repair ship Tutuila in the Mekong Delta, fixing river boats and having shore leave with the enemy. This was followed by duty on the Carrier Oriskany in the same Pacific region.

Steve’s early career involved the Rock and Roll business, first locally, and then based in California where he served as a roadie and technician for Rufus and Chaka Khan, Lou Reed and many others. Steve and friends organized and almost pulled off a giant Woodstock-style rock festival on neighboring farmlands in 1969. Official regulatory elements stopped the event at the last minute or the region could have achieved fame for something beyond tornadoes. After returning to IL, Steve worked in the carpentry and construction business until he was sidelined by a fall.

Auto racing became a passion for Steve. He raced Midget autos and formed a partnership with Rich Corson. He loved to travel and did so frequently with family and friends. He managed to go just about everywhere in the US and took Navy generated excursions to Japan and the Philippines. Dogs, particularly Dobermans, were his lifetime constant companions. If there was a battle to be fought, an animal to be rescued, an adventure ahead, it was great to have Steve at you side. We will miss him.

His struggle has been long, and he faced it bravely. Steve lived an active and eventful life. He prefers to be remembered as that lively guy by the friends he made along the way.

Funeral Information

Visitation will be Saturday, November 24, 11:30 AM until the time of the Celebration of Steve’s Life begins at 2:30 PM at the Overman-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Plainfield. A private family interment will follow at the Plainfield Township Cemetery.
