Clayton Gaines picked up this third straight dirt track win in the UAW American Made Mel Kenyon Midget Series Saturday night at US 24 Speedway. Gaines lined up on the outside of the second row and battled his way to the lead and then fought to hold onto the lead in the 25-lap feature event.
Following several yellows on laps one and two early leader Will Edwards grabbed the point on the restart from the outside of the front row moving by pole sitter Kent Kriegbaum in turns one and two. Logan Huggler quickly passed Kriegbaum and went to work on Edwards, trailed by Gaines. Edward slipped up the race track allowing both Huggler and Gaines to dive under him on lap five. Huggler would lead the next three laps when the caution came out on lap eight. Gaines used the restart to his advantage and grabbed the lead on lap nine. Gaines held the point for the remainder of the race with Huggler challenging him nearly every lap on the high side. Early leader Edwards put in his career best performance running in third and fourth until a spin on lap 18 pushed him to the tail. He would eventually finish 7th. Cole Christy continued gaining confidence and experience with a solid third, followed by pole sitter Kriegbaum and driving championship point leader Dameron Taylor brought home fifth. The UAW American Made Mel Kenyon Midget Series returns to the high banks of Anderson Speedway Saturday night for the Parallax Power Systems 30. Qualifying begins at 6:30 with racing at 8:00. |
