i know we ran at least one of those races. i'm thinking granny said something in refrence to jon peddie or don hewitt driving. so it may have been 1967. we ran a 100 lapper in 1975 with calvin gilstrap. red mcCourt and dave hurst were turning the wrenches at the time. gramps got fired for drinking beer with the drivers. lol..also noticed dick debolt in the 1967 race. he drove stock cars around the cincinnati area through the 1970's.

Dad ran one of these races. (1966 maybe?) Does anyone have the complete results? I have heard the story a million times about that race. Dad had one guy with him as a crew member. I don’t remember his name, but Dad said his crew member (let’s call him “Bob”) like to drink a bit.

As mentioned in other threads, they were going to run the tires all race, only making pit stops for fuel. Dad came buzzing in the pit for his last pit stop. As he coasted to a stop, he looked around and much to his amazement; no one was in his pit.

After waiting a bit, he got out of the car, fueled it himself, hailed a push truck, jumped back in and rejoined the race!

I believe he finished in the top ten, even with the errant pit stop! It seemed “Bob” had found a few beers.

I believe this is the car that he ran. It was considered a super modified at the time because in 1966, sprint cars didn’t have cages. But many supers, simply took the cage off and ran them as sprint cars.

This car the cage was welded on. It had a 364 cid Nailhead Buick in it with six Stromberg carburetors. Later (1968?), it was equipped with fuel injection. The car also had a home made quick change. It had only one set of change gears. You ran them one way for quarter miles. Then flipped them over for half miles.

I’d love to find this car today to restore. But I’m afraid it is gone.

1121 - I have the full results from 1966 and 1967. In 1965, National Speed Sport News just wrote a brief summary and listed the top 5 finishers. The rest may be lost in time. I will post the full rundowns from 66-67 in a little bit. Here is the ad for the first one in 1965.

Regarding Chris Smith's post on Dick DeBolt who finished 3rd in the first 500, he got his racing start at Eldora when it opened. He along with Dick Pratt,Bob Pratt and Jr Culy all started at Eldora. Dick was a very good short track stock car driver. He probably felt more comfortable in a stock car rather than a sprint as as he was pretty big guy.

I remember tagging along with my dad and his friends liking the name Boom Boom.

Bill Fortune (R.I.P.) later went on to own several successful businisess and had the Thrifty Muffler decal (Hand painted) on a lot of race cars. Bill helped Josh along the way and was a guy you could depend on off and on the track, there are alot of families in and around Kokomo that were feed, clothed and kept warm by the guy they called Dog. Bill loved his family and he loved racing oh and he was pretty good at it too. (top five)

My dads dad played in the ballroom on the weekends and could tell stories that would make you smile, wonder and just plain make you think, racing back then was special as was the people that were involved with it.
