1961 USAC MIDGET REVIEW: NO KINKS FOR DAVIES, HE DOES IT AGAIN

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

For the second straight flip of the calendar, the USAC National Midget season, and the accompanying driving championship, belonged to none other than Jimmy Davies.

Unlike the year before when Davies became the first driver/owner champion in series history, in 1961, he teamed with burgeoning team owner Howard Linne of Mendota, Ill.* The results spoke for themselves with a magnificent seasonal resume featuring 11 victories which earned Linne the one and only series entrant championship in his illustrious career.

Using the same formula of combining good qualification efforts with good finishing positions that won him a narrow victory in 1960, Davies completely dominated the division and was leading by more than 300 points at the end of the year.

Davies, the Glendale, Calif. native who now resided near the Indiana beach town of Monticello, was a veteran of practically every type of racing at this point in his career, but at the time had confined his activities to the small cars.* He was the fastest qualifier on 12 occasions, more than any other driver, and finished inside the top-six in 28 of the 48 races he started.

Bob Wente of Saint Louis, Mo. once again chased Davies all season.* The year prior, in 1960, Wente got a streak going that almost overhauled the leader, but this time around, he just couldn’t close the gap.

Newly crowned USAC Championship Car titlist and recent first-time Indianapolis 500 victor A.J. Foyt made a few appearances in the USAC National Midget division and was practically invincible every time.* In 13 races, he won nine, among them being the Hut 100 and the Turkey Night Grand Prix.* He also added a second, a third and a fourth, which earned him seventh place in the final standings despite being absent from the lineup for 45 of the 58 events.

Gene Hartley of Roanoke, Ind. finished third once again to make the top-three in the final standings a carbon copy of the year before.* However, Chuck Rodee and Tommy Copp were newcomers to the top-five.

In an interesting development during the month of February, Harry Turner of Kenosha, Wisc. was suspended from the USAC for failure to disassociate himself from an independent Midget racing association of which he is one of the founders and is presently serving as president (UARA).* The organization was found to be in direct competition to USAC’s National Midget division in the Central Area.* With his absence, it was the first year in USAC’s young history that a Turner car didn’t win a race.* He’d return triumphantly to victory lane in the second event of the following season in 1962.

Eight first-time winners emerged with the series in 1961.* Allen Crowe scored at South Bend (Ind.) Motor Speedway in July while Rufus “Parnelli” Jones hit the midget scene running with two marquee victories, first on Wisconsin’s Milwaukee Mile in August and once again during the season finale on New Year’s Eve at Ascot Park in Gardena, Calif.

Sporting one of the more unique nicknames in all of racing, Keith “Porky” Rachwitz was tops for the initial time with the series in July at the Champaign-Urbana Fairgrounds in Illinois as well as at Michigan’s Hartford Motor Speedway a month later.* Meanwhile, win number one for Arnie Knepper came on his Illini home soil of the Springfield Speedway in June.

On a hot and muggy summer afternoon with temperatures soaring into the 90s, the first and only occurrence of multiple winners came about in a USAC/ARDC co-sanctioned event at Trenton’s New Jersey State Fairgrounds.* Attrition among driver and machinery was at the forefront of the storylines.* Fast qualifier Jimmy Davies was one of the first to bow out of the 250-lapper just nine laps in due to an engine issue in his Linne machine.

The second half found young Bobby Marshman as the leader, building a three-lap cushion in the process.* Soon after, Marshman became one of nine drivers to enter the pits in search of a relief driver.* Davies stepped into Marshman’s Bruce Homeyer ride and finished the distance for the victory.* For Marshman, he was credited with his first career series win.

Danny Frye notched his first in August at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Ill.* while both Joe Walter and Vern Harriman tallied their only USAC wins at Missouri’s Olympic Stadium and at Ohio’s Cloverleaf Speedway, respectively.

In mid-December, Lafayette, Indiana car owner, builder, constructor Bob Higman was appointed as the new USAC National Midget representative with champion driver Jimmy Davies pegged as the alternate.* Higman was named to the position in place of driver Gene Hartley.

I was out from January 61 to January 63 while in Washington DC, but picked it back up when I got back to indiana, what good times were then, but I was busy with a rearengment of my priorities ,and didn't get back to much but Indy for a while, was there for the Gasoline tragedies, then got back into my own racing, my wife was happy with me for that, but we're still together, 63+years now
Thanks Ritchie, for the updates
