Jacobs Nabs First Win of 2019 in FAST on Dirt at I-96 Speedway

Holmesville, Ohio racer, Lee Jacobs, picked up his first win of 2019 claiming event #4 on the 2019 FAST on Dirt tour at I-96 Speedway near Lake Odessa, Michigan Sunday evening. The 1881 Racing team, with crew chief A.J. Havens, were elated in victory lane after defeating a 28 car field that signed in for competition.

With threatening weather just south of the track, FAST 410 and GLSS 360 competitors found beautiful skies above the race track. The morning rains gave them a very fast track, and fans were rewarded with a new track record of 13.379 set by Dustin Dagget in group number one. Fast timers in groups 2 and 3 were former World of Outlaw racers Brian Paulus and Joey Saldana.

The top 2 finishers in each heat were entered into a redraw for main event starting positions. NAPA Auto Parts heat #1 was won by series points leader Cole Duncan followed by Dagget. Heat 2 was won by Paulus with Lee Jacobs runner-up. The third and final heat was taken by California transplant (and non wing veteran) Thomas Meseraull with Saldana taking the other redraw position. The 12 lap B-Main was won by Chase Ridenour .

Twenty cars faced the starters green flag for the 25 lap main event. Outside polesitter Joey Saldana raced into the early lead with pole man Jacobs in tow. The car on the move early was the 5x of Justin Peck who charged from 8th to 4th in only 2 laps, earning him the All Star Performance "Sweet Move" award. The race's first of 2 stoppages came on lap 4 when Thomas Meseraull got deep in the cushion, hooked it, and dumped the Whitney 00. He was not injured and the car suffered minor damage.

Back under green, Saldana continued to show the way and appeared to be the man to beat. Leading the race on lap 9, Saldana broke something in the front end of the Jamie Miller / Hem Saws #6 and went off the backstretch, falling to 3rd place. The "Brownsburg Bullet" fought to regain control and got through the next half lap before it got away from him. Unfortunately, it collected Cap Henry in the Lane Racing #4 and both cars went for a tumble. Both men climbed out unhurt with Henry being awarded the Kear's Speed Shop "Hard Luck" award for having nowhere to go in the mishap.

The field would come to the restart led by Jacobs, with Peck in second followed by Duncan, Dagget, and Tyler Gunn. The next 15 laps would reel off without a caution as Jacobs, Peck and Duncan all stayed in formation with similar speed. The 2 reds and some attrition helped Jacobs with minimal traffic. With Jacobs Leading off turn 4 on the final lap, 4th running Zane Devault collided with Kelsey Ivy, spinning to a stop on the backstretch. Jacobs was across the line as the yellow flag flew, ending the race, with scoring from 2nd on back reverting to lap 24. The final finish order was Jacobs, Peck, Duncan, Dagget and Gunn as the top 5. The rest of the top 10 were Paulus, Ridenour, Ryan Ruhl, Chad Blonde, and Devault, who was scored as the last car on the lead lap. Ridenour earned The Bridge Restaurant "Hard Charger" award advancing 9 positions from 16th to 7th.

With many big events on tap in June for winged sprint cars, the FAST on Dirt tour is off until July 3rd when we return to action at Waynesfield Raceway Park for the Jack Hewitt Classic combined with our sister series, the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series non wing cars! 3 days later, on Saturday, July 6th, we return to Atomic Speedway.

I know this is primarily a non wing board but the FAST on Dirt DOES have several Indiana dates in 2019 at Twin Cities, Gas City, Kokomo and Montpelier. It is also the sister series to the BOSS non wing tour and the former (brief) BOSS wing series. I just want people to see the quantity and quality of cars they can expect when we come to their track.

I come to this forum for all sprint car racing, especially if I can’t find it on Twitter so I’m glad this is posted. I attended the BOSS winged show at Gas City last summer and that was quite a race. 🤙🏻
