PERRIS PROMOTER DON KAZARIAN REMEMBERS STEVE HOWARD

(Perris, CA, December 19, 2014) For the second time in less than two weeks, the Southern California sprint car community was rocked by the death of one of its longest serving members. First it was Evelyn Pratt who passed away in Texas and now Steve Howard who passed away at his home in Norwalk in his sleep on Monday. Unlike many others, when he retired, Howard stayed in constant contact with the sport and will be missed by many far and wide. On Thursday, Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian commented on the loss.

“Like with Evelyn, it is hard to imagine Steve will no longer be around,” the saddened promoter said. “He has been around the sport since he was a little kid watching his father race at Ascot. He raced himself and was a star back in the day. He was a fearless, hardnosed driver who was on the gas every time he was on the track. After he retired, he was always in the pits. It is just going to be strange not to have him around.”

Kazarian smiled and chuckled when he remembered Howard’s personality.

“To say the least, Steve had a crusty exterior,” the promoter smiled. “However, underneath he was a pretty shy guy with a great sense of humor. The So. Cal. Performance trailer was the social center in the pit area. Steve would be there selling tires and parts and also holding court with anyone who stopped by. Whether it was a driver or crew member asking a question about set ups or someone stopping by to tap into Steve’s vast knowledge of the history of sprint car racing in Southern California, he was always available. Like Evelyn, there is no way to replace him. I will certainly miss him,”

Howard’s funeral will be held at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park located at 4471 Lincoln Avenue in Cypress on January 23rd at 11:30 AM. Details regarding a celebration of his life will be released within the next few days.
