Just got off the phone with his brother Bob, he has a broken Pelvis, punctured bladder, 3 breaks in his back, and some other stuff. Bob said he is going to be ok but it is going to take some time. Apparently a guy he was riding with took a wrong turn and Sleepy turned around to try to catch up with him, came around a curve about 60 mph and the guy was stopped in the road and Sleepy hit him. The other guy is in traction they figure he will be in hospital a lot longer than Sleepy. I'll pass on updates as I get them

From Sleepy's wife Erin
a tad overwhelming! SO before all the rumours and stories start flying... here's the scoop everyone: both Sleepy and his bike riding mate Ray Bates crashed come home from Mammoth, thankfully their other riding partner Fred took care of them till they could get help. He knew both of them were in trouble (couldn't move), not a car in sight, no cell phone coverage out there... he was indeed traumatized by what he had just gone through before calling me with the 'news'. They were transported to Crestline to be stabilized and then airlifted to Lancaster for Sleep, Loma Linda for Ray... wish Sleep was closer to home (2 hrs away) but it was the closest trauma centre that would take his injuries... which was: a fractured pelvis, ruptured bladder, damage lumbar, major road rash and plenty of nasty contusions!!! He looks pretty beaten up - and after his MRI they took him immediately in for surgery to repair the bladder. They have kept him drugged induced (on that stuff MJ was taking) while he has a breathing tube in, before his surgery to repair his pelvis tomorrow. Hopefully that will be the last of the surgeries and he can start recovery... it wont be speedy... but lengthy... these things take time to heal! Turkey Night at Perris - I'm not sure about that? But we do THANK everyone for their kind words - very comforting at a time like this... but hey, the best part... he is alive and can wiggle his toes!!! Now this gal needs some sleep : |

Good luck to one of the all time great west coast Midget guys. Also to Ray Bates - Ray has done some amazing engine work over the years. He's the guy that coaxed over 1,000HP out of the Chevy ECOtec 4 cylinder for drag racing applications. He's a super guy and has been a big help to me in developing the ECOtec for Midgets.
Get well soon boys. |

Sleepy is an absolute legend. I still have a trophy he gave me in 1977. Get well Sleepy and our thoughts for Erin and Shay.
