It seems Dorsett racing is getting a little excited.I simply wanted to know Why Knoxville is 50 laps. Not a scathing diatribe on why it should stay at 50 laps or how great winged racing is.Too much Monster energy for Dorsett. It is all in good fun.No offense Dorsett.

in all seriousness, it was originally started for the 50th anniversary race of the nationals. I think (more opinion than anything) they had a great response to it from fans and racers and kept the format. It certainly adds a different aspect to the race.

Some times 5 is too many, and a 100 ain't enough, do like nicecar, and make em all economy races! 30 most of the time is plenty, tires are a factor in that number lots of times. Bob

100 miles in Silver Crown Champ Cars, on 1 mile dirt tracks. No mandatory red for fuel. You gotta squeeze every ounce of fuel you can out of the tank.

They'd honestly struggle to do 30 without a stop if you had more than 3 yellows. 30 isn't enough for a big time race and 40 is too much without a fuel stop.

For years people complained that Saturday was anti-climatic because Kinser or whomever won the race by half a lap etc...

The 50 laps has produced some really dynamite races the last few years including Schatz coming from 21st to win.

maybe they need to put sprint car sized tanks back on sprint cars, the little tanks look crappy anyway, they used to run twin 50 lap races at the Indy Mile no fuel stops, USAC had 50 lap races back in he day, 100 lap midget races no pit stops

Much about our sport has changed. In the 70's with 305's all USAC races were 40 laps and no tracks under a half mile. They ran Twin 50's at the Indy Mile and lots of 50 lappers at Winchester and Eldora. If memory serves me, and sometimes it doesn't, the WoO also ran 50 laps at the Indy Mile and Springfield. In today's world with bigger engines, soft tires and smaller tanks this apparently is not possible. Is it a true sprint car race with a mandatory stop in which crews are allowed to work on the cars? IMHO it is not.

Also as an aside I posted this question about whether the K'ville Nationals is a legitimate sprint car race on another forum and was excoriated by some as being a troll trying to discredit the race. I am beginning to feel much of these sentiments are based upon generational differences and a lack of knowledge by some. In short, I'll take my sprint car racing as pure as I can get it and leave the gimmicks to the marketing gurus of NASCAR and the so-called "Greatest Show on Dirt". See ya at Kokomo!
