Hard to tell from the film what head, neck restraint they preferred. I believe a bandanna was the hot setup.

Around 1987, Sylvester Stallone was hanging around Ascot Park and ESPN Speedweek reported that he was planning to film a sprint car movie called "Yo, Get Sideways". I have several old VHS tapes and this is on one of them. To the best of my knowledge, it never was filmed.
