Fish, I love these old posts because my dad, my next door neighbor, Dink Peters, his daughter, Sharon and I, attended most of these races. However, I was not at this one. These posts just bring back such great memories from a glorious era of great racing and great times spent with my father and friends!!!!

That was the roughest racetrack ever (1978). Pure junk. Granny parked her car after the heat. Tobias's car fell apart in turn one after the checker.

Awesome post, love to see those somewhat forgotten names again. I always forget Merle Bettenhausen drove sprint cars, I usually associate him with midgets and a very short Indy car career. How many sprint races did he run?

One can only imagine how many of the current "cars and stars" would pack up early because of a surface like that. |

Yes, nice to see some names from the past. I actually worked with Sonny Ates, kinda, he worked at Mahan Ford, in Columbus, In, and I worked at Harrison Motors, also a Ford dealer, in the early 50's, and I don't remember Sonny ever saying anything about racing, he was all business at work. Ya just never know! Bob
