A few weeks ago the Shane Hammond Believe Foundation announced that it would be raffling of a custom The Joie of Seating full containment seat at the annual Shane Hammond Memorial NEMA Midget race. The race was rained out, rescheduled, and ran with Shane’s brother winning the race for his first NEMA win. The tickets, however, have not been sold out yet and there are some still available.

Some of you may remember a post on here when Shane past away, but I am sure many of you may not know who Shane was. Shane was a competitor with the NEMA Midgets and passed away during our race at Thompson International Raceway April 6th of 2008. Shane was a friend to everyone he met, and even though he might have had a bad day on the track he ALWAYS had a smile on his face. At age 15 he had brain and spine surgery to remove a tumor, and later had BELIEVE tattooed on his back with a pair of angel wings. This is where the Believe in the foundation’s name comes from.

A little information about the foundation itself, it was founded by Shane’s mother Deb Marvuglio to promote safety in auto racing, and invests in driver’s safety. Through the foundation many racers have been helped with the costs of safety equipment. The foundation also hosts yearly driving schools.

I am proud to have known Shane and call him a friend. Visit www.ShaneHammond.org for more information on the foundation and raffle. The tickets are $50 a piece, and only 37 (Shane’s number) to 50 will be sold. Right now the foundation is aiming for the 37 minimum before they will pull a winner. Feel free to email me with any questions at amartino272@g.rwu.edu, or Deb’s contact information is on the foundation website. Please consider making a donation to the foundation for a chance to win the seat.

Thank you, Abby Martino
