Traxxas TORC Series names racing great Shane Hmiel as Grand Marshal for Charlotte M.S. event

USAC’s 2010 National Sprint Car Series Pavement Champion, Hmiel continues his inspirational comeback from injury with TORC

INDIANPOLIS (July 12, 2011) – Shane Hmiel chased the racer’s dream with as much passion and intensity as anybody, experiencing greatness within grasp that many aspire to, yet few are able to achieve. And along that path of highs came a number of decisions that led Hmiel to the lowest of lows, though it would be a horrific racing accident last October in Terre Haute, Ind. that brought this talented young racer to face the biggest challenge of his life.

The United States Auto Club (USAC) - sanctioned Traxxas TORC Series, presented by AMSOIL, recognizes this and is proud to reach out to Hmiel, naming him the Grand Marshal of the 2011 inaugural TORC short course off-road truck racing event at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“Shane Hmiel provided a lot of excitement for a lot of motorsports fans and USAC is pleased to honor him the weekend of July 22nd and 23rd in Charlotte,” said Kevin Miller, President of USAC. “TORC Series competitors and fans alike will reach out to Shane at Charlotte and let him know he’s still a big part of the racing community.”

Prior to Hmiel’s accident he’d competed successfully in USAC’s three open wheel series (National Sprint Car, Mopar Midget Nationals and the Silver Crown) – earning 2009 Rookie of the Year honors at the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals to go with USAC’s Most Improved Driver award that same year. In 2010, despite his wreck, Hmiel had accumulated enough points to be named as USAC’s National Sprint Car Series Pavement Champion. Hmiel’s charge through the ranks of USAC’s top competitors was not surprising as the North Carolina native had already earned his racing stripes in NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series.

His appointment as Grand Marshal for the TORC Charlotte round comes at a positive time in Hmiel’s career as he makes the transition from racer to television commentator with the No. 1 nationally syndicated motorsports show “3 Wide Life”, and soon to be announced team owner.

“I’m pumped that USAC invited me to be a part of the TORC Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and to be named the Grand Marshal at the first-ever off-road truck race in Charlotte is pretty special,” said Hmiel. “I’ve seen the TORC Series trucks run before and can honestly say the fans in North Carolina are gonna be blown away by this.

“I’d have come out to watch the race anyway … now it looks like I’ll have the best seat in the house!”
