Tri City Speedway in Granite City, IL has been building a new 1/5 mile banked track inside the big track over
the summer. The track is complete and ready for it's first event on Friday, Sept 15th hosting the
600cc outlaw Micros paying $500 to win.
There will be a open practice on Wednesday, Sept 13th..6:00pm - 8:30pm. (All classes welcome)
Plans for the remaining season through Oct 28th will be Micro's, Jr. Sprints and Midgets. The event dates and
outline will be released shortly.
Photos of the track can be found on Tri City's FB page along with Kevin and Tammy Gundaker's Page as of tomorrow.
"Gold Crown" racer's and Fans look for announcement.
Looks like things are leaning towards a midget/micro race on the new 1/5th mile if I had to guess. Wonder if USAC would race either division (sprints or midgets) that late in the year here in the midwest. Tri-City did have a dual show cancelled earlier this year...hmm. Maybe WAR/War East could get a show there sometime?
I always admired Tri-City for the Gold Crown. When the weather wasn't a disaster, I would try to support is much as I could.
Cutting a track inside of a track is a very hard go. I am not sure that I have ever seen it work well. Especially if they share a common straight away.
The Gold Crown has been haunted by rain. Totally agree with the smaller track inside though. Normally doesn't work too well. I grew up with the half mile and the quarter inside (sharing the front stretch) at Tri-City and the quarter got used so much that you had grooves in the front stretch. But there were modifieds on that quarter. There should only be smaller cars on the 1/5th so I hope it works out.
