The Tree City Tornado" Gases It to SCORA Sprint Series Win at Flora
The Tree City Tornado, J.T. Stapp, from Greensburg Indiana got his first career sprint car win Saturday night at the Clay County Speedway in Flora Illinois. This was the second event of the 2009 SCORA Sprint Series schedule. The night started off with the 9 car field running an 8 lap heat race won by Craig Budde from the pole. Alex Coonan and J.T. Stapp would work there way through the field to finish 2nd and 3rd respectively. The finish was then inverted for the 8 lap qualifying race which was won by Alex Coonan. J.T. Stapp would finish 2nd, as both drivers came from the back to run 1-2. The lineup for the 20 lap A-Main was set by one lucky fan drawing the dreaded 8 pill to invert the top 8 in points following the heat and qualifying races. This meant that J.T. Stapp would start 7th, Alex Coonan 8th, and Charleston winner Craig Budde would start shotgun and the field. This is because the previous race winner can start no better than 10th at the next race. The race started by not even getting one lap in before Ft. Wayne's Tony Sessions dumped his #17 mount hard between turn 3 and 4. He would walk away uninjured. The feature got the green on the second try as the top 4 of Matt Humphrey, Dusty Wright, Alex Coonan, and J.T. Stapp would race hard for the first half of the race. The night's only yellow came out when Coonan and Stapp got together in turn 3 as Stapp was attempting to pass him on the top. It would take Coonan out of the event and Stapp would restart 3rd behind Humphrey and Wright. Humphrey picked up the gas early on the backstretch but the green still came out. An elbows up kind of battle would continue with these 3 cars as Stapp worked on Wright and picked him off around the top heading into turn 1 and would dive under Humphery down the backstretch to take the lead. J.T. Stapp would lead the remaining 6 laps to the victory in the 20 lap showdown. Stapp was driving the Bryan Robinson owned Osgood Grub Co., Competition Race Fuels #57R Maxim. Dusty Wright would take 2nd and Matt Humphey, in only his 3rd race in a sprint car would come home 3rd. The SCORA Sprint Car Series will now head into a big weekend with races at Kankakee,IL on Friday and Kamp Speedway in Boswell, IN on Saturday.
