THE FULL HALF OF IT: TALES FROM THE USAC SPRINT STAT BOOK

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Speedway, Indiana (September 28, 2021)………Half-miles have been a common thread in the rich tapestry of USAC’s AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship tour since 1956.

In fact, the roughly 99 percent of all races held between 1956-1980 were contested on dirt and paved ovals a minimum half-mile in length.

Don Peabody, among others, were instrumental in laying the groundwork that eventually put USAC Sprinters on tracks shorter than a half-mile in length starting with the 1982 season.

Still, to this day, 1,027 of the 1,939 (53%) of the series’ races completed have been held on the big half miles, 168 of which have come at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track, host of this Friday night’s 22nd running of the Jim Hurtubise Classic on October 1.

Over the years, the bulk of the schedule has gradually shifted to a docket consisting of a majority 1/4 and 1/3-mile ovals.* This year, alone, six half-mile events have been held during the first 36 races of the season.*

Half-mile winners this year include two-time winner Tyler Courtney (May 8 & Sep 25 at Eldora Speedway); Robert Ballou (May 8 at Eldora Speedway); 1-Chris Windom (May 26 at the Terre Haute Action Track); Justin Grant (Jun 17 at Selinsgrove Speedway); and Logan Seavey (Jul 28 at Terre Haute Action Track), all of whom have also been victorious at Terre Haute’s half-mile in USAC National Sprint Car competition.

One name absent from this year’s half-mile win list thus far is Brady Bacon, who’s had his share of success at Terre Haute, and has finished inside the top-six in all six of his half-mile appearances this season, yet a win for the 2014 Jim Hurtubise Classic has eluded his so far.

Several shots remain for the Broken Arrow, Okla. driver.* If all comes to fruition, four of the final seven races will be held on half-miles, bringing the total to 10 half-mile events in total on a 43-race schedule.

As it stands now, Bacon is in rarified air in terms of half-mile success correlating to a USAC National Sprint Car championship.* Just 10 previous drivers have won the title without the aid of a half-mile win over the past 66 years.

Yet, the chapter containing both the outcome of this year’s remaining half-mile events and the championship race are yet to be written, but Terre Haute certainly could be that boon the 2014-16-20 series champ needs.

Don Branson was USAC’s first sprint car champion, albeit in the brief, three-race Florida circuit in February of USAC’s inaugural season in 1956.* Bill Randall did the same, scoring the title without the aid of a single victory during the 1957 USAC Eastern Sprint Car trail.* Brian Tyler was the most recent to win a USAC National Sprint Car title despite the absence of a single trip to victory lane.

Henceforth, with zero victories during that particular championship season, none of the above were able to attain a half-mile win.* Ken Schrader’s two wins came on the 3/8-mile Paragon Speedway and the one-mile Indiana State Fairgrounds in his 1983 championship, which should almost count for two half-mile wins, but I digress.

Robbie Stanley won once and only once in the second of his three consecutive series titles in 1992, at the 4/10-mile Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., which was paved at the time.

Tracy Hines captured three of the first seven feature wins to start his 2002 championship campaign.* Hines, however, did not go back to post-race celebration mode after May 19.* The three early season wins came at the smallest venue, the 1/4-mile Anderson (Ind.) Speedway, and the biggest track, the one-mile Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway, and one of the trickiest dirt tracks in Haubstadt, Indiana’s Tri-State Speedway.

The 3/4-mile paved tri-oval of Virginia’s Richmond International Raceway, the 3/8-mile dirt oval of Indiana’s Kamp Motor Speedway and the 1/4-mile red clay of Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway were the spots for Jerry Coons Jr. in 2008 as he completed the third leg of the triple crown.

Levi Jones didn’t require a half-mile feature win to net his third consecutive USAC National Sprint Car driving crown in 2011 after tallying triumphs on a pair of 3/8-mile dirt tracks in Pennsylvania’s Lincoln Speedway and Indiana’s Lawrenceburg Speedway before scoring the finale at the .333-mile dirt of Kings Speedway in California.

Bryan Clauson became a back-to-back champion in 2013, scoring a total of seven wins on three different sizes of track, none of which were of the half-mile variety: 3/8 at Ocala, Fla., Lawrenceburg, Ind. and Canyon Speedway Park in Arizona, plus the world’s fastest 5/16-mile in Putnamville, Ind. and the three quarter miles of Bloomington, Ind., Kokomo, Ind. and Arkansas’ I-30 Speedway.

With another victory at Terre Haute this Friday, Bacon, a 13-time winner on half-miles in his career, could very well cement his visions of a fourth series championship.

Preparation and showing up for the task at hand is half the battle, and the other half is simply getting the job done.* Bacon would certainly be fulfilled by putting both halves together on one of the most historic halves of them all.* We will see how the full story unfolds Friday.

Friday’s 22nd running of the Jim Hurtubise Classic presented by Terre Haute Chevrolet features both the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship and the Schaeffer’s Oil Indiana RaceSaver Sprints.

Pits open at 3pm EDT, grandstands at 4pm, drivers meeting at 5:45pm & hot laps at 6:30pm with qualifying and racing to follow.* Adult general admission tickets are $25. Infield admission is $15. Kids 11 & under are FREE.

The USAC portions for this weekend’s events from Gas City and Eldora can be watched LIVE on FloRacing at https://bit.ly/3frPoW6.
