One of my favorite stories about Mr. Gurney was when both of his drivers (I can't remember who) were complaining about the handling of one of his designs. The team was at a road course track testing and Dan was listening to their comments involving push and other issues. After a bit, he walked over and picked up a helmet. Dressed in slacks, a dress shirt and tie, he climbed into the car just like that and with the helmet. He went on the track and ran 2 very quick laps. Both of them were 1 1/2 seconds faster than either of his drivers had ran. When he pulled in he calmly commented he hadn't felt what they did. All of this in his street clothes. No uniform or nomex. And he hadn't driven a racecar in 3 or 4 years.
