Story by SkinnyKennysPhotos
August 1st 2009 was a special night of racing at Waynesfield Raceway Park. The entire nights program was sponsered by Smitty's General Contracting and Texas Roadhouse of Lima, Ohio. The sponsers provided trophies to each feature winner, put up money for a sprint car "dash for cash," and gave away many door prizes to lucky fans. Roadhouse peanuts, cowboy hats, blankets, frizbies, and childrens watches were some of the items thrown into the crowd during intermission.

The four fastest 360 winged sprint cars were put into a special 5 lap "dash for cash." Mike Brecht and Tim Allison would start on the front row with JR Stewart and Mike Dunlap lining up behind them. When the green flag waved to start the race, Brecht rocketed into the lead and was never really challenged during the short fast paced race. Mike Brecht was all smiles in victory lane as he received the bonus cash from Smittys General Contacting.

As the sun began to set over Waynesfield, a light sprinkle of rain could be felt in the air which prompted the track crew to hustle up and get with the program so the racing activities could be finished before the rain took over. The 1/4 mile dirt track was in excellent shape and required very little attention during the evening. That was a big help in keeping the program running quickly and finishing the racing before 10:00pm.

The Waynesfield Tuff Trucks were the 1st feature event to take to the high banks. Randy Crossley and Gabe Twining started on the front row and would pace the field around to start the 15 lap race. Gabe Twining grabbed the lead at the start but his brother Matt Twining started in the 2nd row and was right on his bumper. The truck race soon turned into a battle of the brothers that has been a common occurence so far this season. Midway through the race, Matt would get past Gabe and that would be all she wrote. Matt Twining would easily go on to win yet another Tuff Truck feature race at Waynesfield with Gabe Twining finishing 2nd and Tim Dick rounding out the top 3. The truck heat races were won by Keith Shockency, Gabe Twining, and Matt Twining while Jessica Nuss won the truck B-main event.

The front wheel drive Compacts were the 2nd feature of the night. It was truelly amazing to see 16 of the small cars pull onto the track to compete since this was only the 2nd time this new class ran at Waynesfield Raceway Park. Jeff Kimes won the 1st Compact race at Waynesfield a few weeks ago but would have to start this weeks race deep in the pack. When the race started, Kimes got right to work passing his competitors. Kimes showed the many rookie racers just what some dirt track experience can do for a driver. He went on to score his 2nd Compact feature win in as many races. Jordan Flynn was 2nd followed by Justin Durflinger in 3rd. Compact heats were won by Kimes and Flynn.

The super fast 360 winged sprint cars would take to the track next. Jeff Williams and Caleb Helms would lead the field to the green. Helms took the front spot and set a fast pace as the race leader. It didn't take many laps before Helms had to deal with the lapped traffic. The slower cars caused Helms to lift off the throttle to keep from running over them. This was the opportunity that JR Stewart was looking for. Stewart seemed to find a better path thru the traffic and was able to make a pass for the lead around Helms. Once in front, there would be no catching JR Stewart. Stewart had been in position to win the previous night at Limaland until he got caught up in an accident on the last lap of the race which caused him to finish in 15th position. There would be no trouble tonight to keep him from winning at Waynesfield Raceway Park. Tim Allison finished in 2nd and Jared Horstman was 3rd after starting 8th. Caleb Helms fell back to finsh 4th after leading the first part of the race. The sprint car heat winners were Mike Brecht and Tim Allison.

Just as the UMP Modifieds were pulling onto the track for the final feature of the night, the rain began to take over. The cars were all sent back into the pit before the race got started. Luckily the rain only lasted less than 5 minutes and wasn't strong enough to hurt the racing surface. Within 10 minutes the cars were sent back onto the track. After a few hotlaps, the drivers and track were ready to complete the show. Barney Craig and Brian Post brought the field around to take the green. Post is the 2008 Waynesfield Modified track champion and he earned his career 1st win at the track earlier this year. Post would go on tonight to lead all 20 laps of the race and win in a dominate fashion. After running a white colored car for the past few years, he recently changed the car's color to black. He claims the black made his car faster and I had to agree after that performance!! Chris Ullery finished 2nd and Bill Keller was 3rd. Indiana's Terry Hull finished 4th on his first visit to Waynesfield. Ullery and Keeler claimed the heat wins for the UMP Modified division.

Saturday night August 8th Waynesfield Raceway Park will be running 410 non-wing Sprint Cars, UMP Modifieds, Tuff Trucks, and Compacts. This racing program is also set up to provide some help to kids with cancer. Anyone who brings a new toy for donation to the Nationwide Childrens Hospital will receive a free hotdog or pop from the track's concession stand. Items like crayons, coloring books, art supplies, and toys for boys and girls ages infant to teens will be greatly appreciated. These children often spend weeks at a time in Childrens Hospital while being treated for cancer. These donations help the kids pass the time during those long stays.
