The Corvette chief designer had stated that they had taken the performance of the front engine Corvette as far as they could. To continue to get performance gains that they needed to move to the mid-engine design. They also talked about how even the original designer or the Corvette was always wanting a mid-engine design, and they showed some of his concept cars that were all mid-engine designs.
