I think one of the important points we are forgetting is Sammy is one of those
guys who got an education, before anybody ever thought "book smarts" were
important.
If Sammy wasn't a sprint car driver he probably could of got a good paying job
being an engineer. How many other racers could say that?
I think Ryan Newman is the only racer in the history of Nascar that has won
the Daytona 500 who had a college degree.
I don't know how many racers won the Indy 500 that had a college degree, but
Mark Donahue was one of them. He was also an engineer.
I'm not saying everybody should get a college degree, but what I am saying
is one who does and also races is a special person. They don't have to race
to make a living, they choose to and could be doin' something else if they wanted.
Their options are open. I think that is important and says something special
about the individual. A "guage" to rate somebody if you want to look at the person
as a whole and as role model to follow.
