That was Steve Bolen's turbine.

He ran it at Manzy and PIR sprint car races a couple of times as well as Pikes Peak among other places. Throttle response and whoaing it up were its downfalls.

Re: A J Foyt

Back in the early 70's if Goodyear was tire testing at Phoenix International Raceway I often would cut afternoon classes in High School and go watch them test.

The guard at the turn 2 entrance to...

Re: When and Where Did You See Your 1st Sprint Car Race

My first actual race was 1957 at the 5/8 mile dirt oval in Richmond, Va for the USAC stock cars.

I was all of 3 years old. And I actually remember being at it.

Re: When and Where Did You See Your 1st Sprint Car Race

My introduction to the awesome sound of the Offy.

AJ Foyt won the 100 lap race. Went to pits afterwards and got...

Re: Duke Cook RIP

I had many beers with him bench racing when he lived in Phoenix for a while. The legend in his own mind comment is funny and part of his legend and nature.

I finally got a chance to check these videos out. Very interesting assortment of history. The Steve Truchan trio of videos is worth the watch, as are all of the others.

Thanks for directing me...

A very nice article.

It was easy to visualize the A Main action up front, especially the last 10 laps.

Sad that Thomas ended up in that mess. The 3 of them duking it out would have been nuts.

Re: Jim Clark

My favorite story about Jim Clark is from Andy Granatelli's "Mr. 500" book.

He talks of Jim getting ready to go out for qualifying for the 1966 Indy 500 in one of the STP Lotus cars. Andy always...

Re: AFT is having racing at the Indy Mile

The comment about the sprinters is the truth.

At the old half mile paper clip style Ascot track in Gardena the one lap track record was held be flat trackers. They were about a half a second...

One of my favorite stories about Mr. Gurney was when both of his drivers (I can't remember who) were complaining about the handling of one of his designs. The team was at a road course track testing...

Re: Ridiculed, Demoralized, Criticized

You can throw NASCAR into this also. It used to be good, decent racing until they made all of the cars cookie cutters and began "track debris" cautions to bunch everyone back up to enable the fans to...

Re: So What Ended Clauson's Day At Indy?

They call it the 105% rule.

The leaders were running 218-ish at the time, so all cars had to be turning at least about 207.6 a lap or faster in order to be allowed to continue running.
