Lawrenceburg Speedway - 5/4/68

I realize most here are not as hung up on the Lawrenceburg Speedway as I am, but this was a night from some 40+ years ago that I revisit with interest. Plus, there are a bunch a names recognizeable to many here. So, inasmuch as IN is now in offseason mode, leaving me pretty much with no life, I kill time and take up cyber-space with the following:

Qualifications - 30 Cars
9 Calvin Gilstrap 15.36

The "Cream" pretty much rose to the top in this race. I still recall Kinser, Gaines, & Nordhorn putting on quite a show on this night as they and others often did back then.

I was perhaps even more pleased to recall that a young charger named John Mugavin in #57 won the Stock Car Feature on that night followed by Ross Smith, Pat Patrick, Bob Creviston, and Jerry Lipps. John had run 2nd in his heat and won the Fast Car Dash. I've heard there is a 2nd generation Mugavin still racing. Anyone have any info on that??? :wink:O::wink

Fish, was Pete Brewer the owner of the 14 car, Sheldon was driving? Bob

It was, as I recall, a pinkish "Brewer's Garage" sponsored car #14. I don't know who the owner was but seems reasonable that it could have been Pete Brewer. Vallonia, IN rings a bell for me concerning this car and driver. "Pink" may not exactly describe the paint job, but I don't think anyone was gonna give Sheldon any crap about it whatever the hue. :wink

Fish, keep right on posting. It brings back old, good memories. Even as a youth in Illinois I got to see some of these guys. One Saturday night at the Pittsfield, Illinois speedway a guy from Kentucky showed up. We had never heard of him, but he smoked the locals (including Jerry Blundy if memory serves me), even though he had a little trouble going off the 1/2 turn into the bean field. Turns out he came through west-central Illinois on his way to races the next week in Knoxville, Iowa. His name was Roy Robbins and of course the races were the first Knoxville Nationals.

Keep up the good work.

Fishburg, I thought it probably was, Jerry, Pete's son, carried on the tradition, now his son, JL is carrying it on, also, and he has a son, Pete also, who will carry it on from him, he's 3 now, I think, and JL already has him a go-kart. Jerry told me, they had the number 14, before AJ did. Looking at that list, returns old memories, and those that are gone, some didn't go, in the most choice means, as I remember, Bobby Black, died on I65, in a fiery car crash, burned up in it. Bob

Talk about memories.

Do you remember if Bobby K and Nordhorn were in team cars for McDaniel furniture?

Interesting Marv, don't know why but I always thought Ira was in a well you know full bodied car.
