COURTNEY CLINCHES USAC NATIONAL MIDGET TITLE

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Placerville, California (November 21, 2019)………Following his first USAC National championship with the AMSOIL National Sprint Cars in 2018, Tyler Courtney has clinched the 2019 USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget title for Clauson/Marshall Racing, who, in turn has wrapped up the series’ owner title.

With a maximum of 160 points available for the next two events, Courtney’s lead of 171 is enough to lock up the championship and collect a second prong of the coveted triple crown with USAC’s national series.

It’s been a banner year for the 25-year-old Indianapolis, Ind. driver who’s led the standings for the duration of the 2019 season following two-straight victories in the first two events of the year at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla.

He leads in nearly every statistical category with the series, including wins (8), laps led (175), top-fives (20) and top-tens (25) to go along with seven fast qualifying times and heat race wins in 28 starts.

Courtney’s Wayne City, Ill. victory in October was his eighth and most recent of the season, a number which makes him the first driver since Jeff Gordon in 1990 to win at least that many races in a single USAC National Midget season.

On Saturday at Bakersfield, California Lightning Sprints and Hobby Stocks join the Midgets. Pits open at 2pm Pacific, gates at 3pm and racing at 6pm.* Adult general admission tickets are $16.* Seniors 65+ and Military are $14.* Kids 6-12 are $8.* Kids 5 and under are free.

Watch all the action LIVE and on-demand on FloRacing and listen to LIVE audio on the USAC app.* Follow along with live timing and scoring on the USAC and Race-Monitor apps.

Not that it matters but isn't there a 168 points possible or did they change points system from last one I have?

There are no heat races at Turkey Night, only last chance qualifiers/semi-features. The top-10 are locked into the feature through qualifying and, thus, do not compete in the prelim races that night. The full points format occurs only when all cars get a chance to compete in the prelim events to earn the same amount of points.

All cars get a chance to make a run during qualifying, so there are points for that. 6 pts. for 1st, 5 for 2nd, 4 for 3rd, 3 for 4th, 2 for 5th and 1 for 6th. Then feature points, with 70 going to the winner. A max of 76 can be earned that night.

The traditional format will be used at Bakersfield with 6 points max for the fast qualifier, 8 pts. max for the heat winner and 70 pts. for the feature winner.
