Weekly terra haute show

I already know that a bunch of folks, are going to cry about this post, talk about safety, or money, or some other crybaby crap. But a nonwing sprintcar, is meant to run on a half mile. There should be a weekly show at terra haute, period. And it should get extreme support. And a big purse.

You're not here for an honest debate if you start your post with saying anybody that disagrees with you is a crybaby. With that said, it's just not practical. You need weekly racers to support a weekly program. Most of these teams are teams that don't have unlimited resources. Why would a car owner in this area ask for the wear and tear that racing on the big half mile will get him/her, for $1500 to win, when they could go compete on a track every week the size of LPS? The big stars and teams are on the road with USAC, MSCS, etc, so they won't be there most weeks. And the hardcore fans will mostly be where the big race that weekend is happening. What promoter's going to take the financial risk under those circumstances? This great track has been a "Special Event" track for over a half a century. And it always will be.

while that would be awesome. not sure you would get enough support from the teams, with LPS and Paragon on saturday your only real options would be friday or sunday. I do think Terra Haute needs more than just 4-5 races through-out the year but i don't think they could sustain a weekly show

Slidejob 7/16/15 12:16 PM

Perris, in California, has no problem doing it. And in the 70's, Calistoga Speedway ran a weekly show, and it was the best racing in the country.

Re: Weekly terra haute show

Gerry Olsen tried it when he had the track and the FANS didn't support in the numbers needed to keep it going. Don't blame Olsen as he did spend his money to try to make a weekly series. He did more than just about every keyboard jockey out there to promote races. Cars didn't support it either. Perris doesn't run weekly as fans and cars are coming in droves for that to happen and what happen in the 70's is just that, it happened. Very few 1/2 mile tracks have weekly shows. you can count them on one hand.
Our racing is a dying sport. enjoy and support your local tracks while they are here. There is too much for people to do and the cost of everything in the sport keeps going up for the tracks, fans and racers.

Look what happened to the car count at the Burg and it's not even a half.

What happened at the Burg? 39 sprints? and Im guessing a few didn't come because of very iffy weather. A couple others had trashed cars.

Slidejob 7/16/15 1:24 PM

What D.O. Said, is the sad truth. Something has got to be done. Nonwing sprintcar racing fans, are ohmost like a "small town" there should some sort of union. Where people help each other. With enough support, 50 people could get together, and rent a bus, for races at say, terra haute. As part of a union, or club, folks should help each other. To some, it might sound silly, but as a union, everyone could pitch in, and buy say, beef, and food, in bulk. Keep it stored in a big freezer. People might laugh, but if people help each other, it would be a lot easier to get to the races.

I believe Bobby is refering to the topic at hand here, Charles; nothing to do with sprint week.

Big crowd

HARFprez 7/16/15 3:39 PM

Great crowd with more fans in the infield then i've seen in a long time. Fair food and GREAT racing for all. Sorry for the positive post, now, as you were.

HARFprez 7/16/15 3:44 PM

...and by the way...Terre Haute.

Perris is listed as a 1/2 but it is a very, very small half. And they have cut back on the schedule to only 11 nights over a span of 9 months for this year. But I agree that 1/2 mile tracks can offer some of the best racing... I miss Manzy!

Whoever was saying they didn't like the fair during ISW sure didn't have the view I had when I left the infield and sat up hi in turn 4. The light and rides in the background make my brain think of the past. I was in and out of the main entrance 3 times and never was asked to pay for parking. We sat in traffic for over a hour to get out of there but i didnt mind at all.We got on 63 heading north and hit a bump by the bridge and my trunk lid fell off.The bridge was narrow so we had to go about a mile up the road to turn around and go find it. Sure enough the lid had been ran over a few times and wasn't worth getting run over trying to get it.I don't get to go to races like I used to cause life is a little different for me then it used to be. I had a great time last night and didn't hear one person complaign.

While this may be true in Indiana, after all you only have 1 Half Mile Dirt Track, here in Minnesota we have 5, with 4 running weekly & 1 dormant. Wisconsin has 2, both running weekly, Iowa has 13, with 9 running weekly, and South Dakota has 2, both running weekly. So, it CAN be done. Maybe Terre Haute just has too much competition for Fans & Cars.

Slidejob 7/16/15 7:47 PM

In the history of our sport, the greatest weekly shows, Calistoga, Ascot, Knoxville, Williams Grove, just to name a few, are all half miles. Fact.

Hamby812 7/16/15 9:09 PM

Keep in mind winged vs non wing cars. May not sound like it would make a difference but it does. It's sad to say it but the harsh reality is terre haute would have at most a 5% chance of being successful if they ran a full season weekly schedule. To many other options out there that are easier on equipment. They would have to pay considerably more to get cars away from the other tracks. People seem to factor out 2 huge things, geography and fans. When all the other tracks are a 1/2 mile or close then it'd be fine(not in Indiana) and I personally love terre haute but if I had to choose between watching a race on a 1/4 or a 1/2. I'd take the 1/4 75% of the time. I like to see a driver make a big difference, often times on a 1/2 the best car wins and a guy driving his butt off gets nothing to show for it.

Tumey's 55 7/16/15 10:49 PM

See Jerry Shaw's earlier post. In Indiana there are a multitude of smaller tracks running weekly shows which pay the same and are easier on motors. So, his conclusion, why choose the big track. Bottom line sounds like this has been tried at THAT without success.

oppweld 7/16/15 11:01 PM

It doesn't have to be a weekly
Run 6 to 8 sprint shows with most of them being Friday nights. (LESS COMPETITION) one that needs to happen is a 2 day show Indy weekend. Make the Hulman 40-50 to win with a 1000 to start and your not gonna have problem with car counts.

More races would work out fine, but the original post said weekly racing at terre haute. 6-8 races would be about perfect.
