Easter used to be opening day

Was just kicked back on sofa and started thinking (man its dangerous for me) when the racing season opened on Easter Sunday I"m thinking Paragon raced in the afternoon and then everybody loaded up and headed south to Haubstadt. I"m not sure if I"m right or not but I think we ran twin 100 lappers sprints and stock cars. Man those were good times :8:

I remember going to Hagerstown Raceway on Easter Sunday after church. They would have an Easter Egg hunt for us kids before the racing started.

Do you remember Smokey Stover, from Staunton, Va. 306 car (modified coupe) back in the early 60s? My first dirt track hero. He got badly hurt at Hagerstown, pretty much ended his career. He used to race at Eastside Speedway in Waynesboro, Va. & occasionally at Winchester...

Wasn’t it on Easter Sunday several years ago that Cliff Cockrum received a shattered pelvis socket in a spectacular crash at Paragon?

Yes. I was there that day. There was a short inner guard rail across from the starter's stand that was supported by some railroad ties buried on end that were higher than the top of the rail itself by a foot or so.

I don't remember how the whole thing started, but Cliff got launched and landed driver's side down on top of the rail with one of the railroad ties in the cockpit with him.

Everything considered, he was lucky to have gotten out of that crash with no worse injuries than he received.

I remember that name.
