Good Parents

When visiting your local race track this summer and you decide to bring your kids PLEASE do the following.

1. Bring hearing protection for them such as quality ear muffs.

2.bring eye protection for them in the form of good goggles or better yet ski goggles.

3. Last but not least bring the kids some toys to occupy their time, just because your enjoying the races doesn't mean they are.

4.Parents of newborn infants leave them at home a loud dirty sun baked race track is no place for infants and little kids.

Quit texting or talking on your phone and spend some quality time with your kids at a race track.

I was at a track once when a lady(who couldn't speek English) thought intermission was a good time to change her youngsters diaper. No she didnt want to take the time to haul that kid to the clean bathroom. She whipped ol juniors drawers down right on the bleacher 2 feet next to me.

You guys are complaining about future fans. I know the racing was alright last night you guys are ******** about kids being at races. Probably the same crotchedy old men who yell at the neighbor kids too.

If they would have stuck a pair of goggles and a pair of ear muffs on me, when I was a kid going to the track, I would have learned to hate going to the races. Thank God my parents didn't do that when I was growing up on the Paragon hillside or the infield at Terre Haute.

Seriously? That is a bit ridiculous. I think your bias about someone not speaking English, is the reason you were offended.:19: Do you really use sanitizer all around your seats when you to go to a race.

Your post might apply to racer-x but the original members comments are just basic parenting and said nothing about not taking kids to the races except for newborn infants, who have absolutely not a clue they're at a race. Common sense should kick in with newborns.

Bill,

Common sense does not exist anymore unfortunately.

Drunk fans ( big kids ) are the ones who need to be left home. They cause more problems than the kids. The sad part is most will be driving home from the track.

Guess I'm a bad parent with these guidelines. 9 months old and already been to 20 races. :19:

sprintracer82 7/6/14 10:30 AM

I was three weeks old when I went to my first race. I also never wore eye or ear protection. I would have never went if I had to fuss with all that

robert gatten 7/6/14 10:32 AM

worst yet, is people that bring a dog to the races and then the dog craps on the walk way going out the gate and in front of concession stand !:7: This was at LPS last night. Dogs should not be permitted in the area.

Keep up the bad parenting, Rube. I predict you'll raise a good kid, if you keep doing things the way you are.:3:

Again, it goes back to common sense thinking. If you're putting your kid in an environment that might cause damage to hearing without taking the necessary precautions then it doesn't matter what I or anyone else thinks of your parenting. I'm sure you would be the first one distraught if your child suffered hearing loss due to those actions.

Perfect example... I've seen Jerry Coons Jr and Amy Coons take their kids to races on many occasions when they were very young. They made sure the kids had the appropriate protection.

It's common sense.

While suggestions are fine. Mind ya own business is my motto. Never had ear protection and thats when they ran muffler less.

Bob, Was it a service dog and did they clean the mess?. If they bite Marv, they are more than welcome :) J/K Him and Gregg will know what Im talking about . :)

I just want to clarify something... My perspective is in the pits and being close to the cars. I rarely sit in the grandstands and what I'm thinking doesn't necessarily apply there. Grandstands and the pits are 2 completely different circumstances.

Would never say someone is a bad parent for not making kids wear safety gear at a race. Will say this, ever been hit in the face by a rock at a race, I have several times. I now wear eye protection for that reason, had a rock hit me hard very close to my eye. If Dad is wearing ears and eyes the kids will do it to be like Dad, it will not be a burden. It is everyone's choice but was a good suggestion.

Wasn't a kid but I actually went up and bought a set of goggles for some girl one night at Eldora who had contacts. I had a ex Fiance with contacts. Dust and Contacts don't mix well.

From that point on, she had a blast :)

You are doubly bad. You have a dog (small horse) that you sometimes take to the races, and she poops.....:D:D:D

robert gatten 7/6/14 9:08 PM

NO it was not a service dog. droped its present by the gate and every 4 ft all the way out to the parking lot. Unless it's a service dog it has no business in the grandstand area.. JMO

Amen to this.....drunk fools at racing events are in my opinion one of the biggest obstacles to attracting new fans. I feel like a bad parent exposing my 4 and 9 year olds to the kind of stupidity that one normally only experiences at a biker bar. I know our sport is "old school" and all but some traditions do need to die. I bet 25% of the fans at most racing events couldnt pass a breathalizer before driving off the lot. Just sayin.......

Also, I was pretty disgusted at fan behavior at Busch Stadium this year as well, so its not just racing.....

I'm no teetotaler by any means but people really should learn some self respect.

Re: Good Parents

I started going to the races with my father since I was 3months old, and I am 26 now...racing has been in my family before I was even thought of...my father raced Hobby stocks, his dad raced, my late grandfather on my moms side raced, and my late uncle Marcus "Hannie" Phelps and he was a legend at Danville Speedway...the only complaint I have is the fan numbers have really dropped and the car counts are dropping really fast! :( In my opinion I really don't want the racing business to stop altogether and as fans we all need to come together more as a family instead of hurting the sport more then it already is. Yes, we all have our regular friends and racing families that we all hang out with at the races and we all have fun, but we need to fiqure out some way of getting more fans in the stands!! What happened to the free t-shirts drivers would give away all the time at even regular events to the kids or whoever in the stands?! I am not trying to cause any arguments or anything just stating facts and my own thoughts and opinions. However, yes I will agree on technology has become more popular throughout the years. I try and take as many videos (even though my phone isn't that great) and pictures of family and friends at the races as much as possible!! I just wish there was something we could all agree on and come up with ideas and put those ideas to good use to keep this sport alive and maybe grow more, because it all starts somewhere and most of it starts with the kids wanting to go!! :) I just want to see this sport grow more like it was! there is so much talent in a lot of these younger kids that have been coming into this sport and with a little guidance and help we can make it grow! I don't want to be sitting at home 20years from now wishing I could take my kids (if I ever have any) to the races and there not be any! I look forward to the days where I can go to the races with my father still to this day and I plan on doing it with my kids (if I ever have any) when that day comes!!
