Lake Odessa Updates

Being nearly 6 p.m in Michigan and having heard nothing to the contrary, I assume the USAC AMSOIL National Sprints will be racing tonight at I-96 Speedway. Anyone there that can do updates for those of us tied up and unable to make the trip? :9:

Thanks, Charles. Guess I had hoped for a larger field. But it's a long tow and there's not many Michigan cars around to bolster the field.

Would always like to see more cars, but considering MSCS had the same amount at their home track last week , I would say that isn't too bad.

:39: Great to see that USAC is able to keep up with MSCS.

Sorry Brent, couldn't help it. :D

Just a question, what does the car count @ TSS last week have to do with the car count @ Lake Odessa?

I'll add fuel to the fire . The only difference between USAC and MSCS is the initials. Go to a race either group runs, and you see the same guys at the track. You have to run both if you race for a living.

CTtoPA 6/22/13 8:45 PM

I'm not sure if USAC heads are dumb likes foxes, or just plain dumb. There are so many issues that need to be addressed if they expect to survive.

I would say payout is somewhat different

DD went out for the warm up for heat one and had a RR go down.. USAC decided to let the rest of the cars "clean the track and go in for fuel" so heat 2 was the first heat. Whew!

Well. They ran 3 heats and now watering... I-96 speedway has done a good job of taking care of the track tonight as far as I'm concerned. I think it's going to be a while before the sprints are up for their feature. We got street stocks and sports compact (4 cyl) on the 3/8th track in the infield of the half mile, them the mods on the big track, then finally the sprints.

Keep in mind that 10 of those 20 cars are USAC members and travel the entire USAC schedule supporting USAC's strongest division!!

Brady Bacon won it, Clauson second, Hines third, DD fourth, Balou fifth.

BACON BANKS I-96 AMSOIL NATIONAL SPRINT SCORE

Lake Odessa, Michigan…….Brady Bacon of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma came into Saturday night’s AMSOIL National Sprint Car event at I-96 Speedway as the only driver to finish in the top-ten in each race this season. He has seen his share of frustration, however. He finally cracked the win column this year after a hard-fought 30-lapper for the Hoffman Auto Racing team in the Mean Green – Lykins Oil #69 Triple X/Stanton Mopar.

“We have a really good package when there’s something to lean on like tonight – it seems like we’ve been hitting places that are slick-slick – and we’ve definitely been really fast on the bigger tracks. I’ve gotten a lot better on the half-miles and really like them now. I knew the bottom would be there for a little bit, but not last long, so I knew I had to go after it quickly and try to get by Bryan as soon as possible. We almost got him on the top, but we just had a really good car and could move around to get by him,” Bacon said.

Defending series champion Bryan Clauson jumped to the lead from the pole, but three-time 2013 winner Kevin Thomas, Jr. wasted no time moving to the front. After rolling by Hunter Schuerenberg on lap-two, Thomas drove by Clauson for the lead on lap-three.

After stretching out a lead over the first run of the race, Thomas’ quest for a fourth win for the season abruptly came to an end when he shredded a right-rear tire on lap eleven.

Clauson resumed the lead, but Bacon was quickly pressuring him for the top spot, as Dave Darland joined the fray in the top-three. After a quick yellow for a Robert Ballou flat right-rear, another long green-flag stretch erupted as Bacon moved high and low on Clauson for the lead. After showing a nose low, Bacon moved to the outside of Clauson, who held him off. The next lap, Bacon moved low in turns one and two and came down the backstretch with the lead on lap 15.

Two late cautions slowed things again, but Bacon was relatively unthreatened as he took the win by 1.276-seconds over Clauson, who held onto second in the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing – Chevy Performance #20 Beast/Kistler.

“Watching the heat races and stuff, I thought the bottom might be there for a little bit. We knew we had to get to the top early, and then I dropped down there and he about drove around the outside of us. We went back to doing what we could on the top, but Brady was really, really strong tonight. They were in a league of their own. It was another great night, and stringing these top-fives together has been a huge stretch for us. I tend to get going in the middle of the summer anyway, so to click off some good nights, I feel good going into a busy part of the schedule,” Clauson said.

Off the final corner, tenth-starting Tracy Hines stuck the bottom to sneak by Darland to finish third in the Hansen’s Welding – Motor City Auto Transport #4 DRC/Stanton Mopar.

“We had a tire issue in qualifying that put us behind the eight-ball, and we were fast from then on. I-96 is a fast joint, for sure. I really didn’t think we’d be able to get going that well, just as fast as we were running around here. The bottom came in some, and with guys having trouble on the top, it played into us being able to get through there some. I’m happy to get third right at the end,” Hines said.

Darland retained his point lead after setting a New Track Record at 17.791 seconds and finishing fourth in the Phillips Motorsports – Racer’s Advantage #71P DRC/Foxco, and Ballou rallied to get back up to fifth in the Rick Pollock – Bates Commodities #21x Maxim/Advanced.

Just pointing out the hypocrasy of some people on this board. One group gets nothing said about it and the other gets ripped for the same thing. Can you imagine the outrage if the Danville midget show that got canceled because predicted rain would have been a USAC show? It would have been endless, and very little was said. That was not a slam to MSCS. With the cost of competing it is tough for any group to get a large group to travel. Didn't the Outlaws have 19 cars one night in Texas?

Re: Lake Odessa Updates

Lucas Oil LMs the other night only had 18 paying ten thou to win.

My guess is the forecast kept a few teams from making the trip. I mean they already got dumped on the night before.

3wide 6/23/13 8:44 AM

Not only the distance and forecast, but LPS was paying $2500 (half of what USAC pays), is much closer to home for many teams, and most of the "top teams" were in Michigan..

There were 21 MTS nonwingers running Friday in MI but just a shame very few came out to run with USAC.

I enjoyed the trip up there. Nice facility. I'd support the place if I lived close. The car count was what I expected going in. I mostly went because it's a place I had never been to. With the weather, I actually lucked out as north was the place to go.

Again, that's why radar and forecasts don't make the final call for me. A zero percent chance of rain the other night = a monsoon. Last night was "iffy", and I didn't see a rain cloud all day. Win some, lose some in the race fan game.

I like to thank the usac cars that raced last night. I also would like to thank the local cars that showed up and raced also. Michigan is more of a stock car state. We only have one track that races weekly sprint cars and they are winged ,also race on Sat nights. The only other two groups we have are SOD (360) and the MTS. So thinking we were going to have a big turn out of local cars is not going to happen

MTS is nothing and I mean NOTHING like the level of competition of the talent pool Indiana has to draw from... They're more like a club racing group with a handful (maybe) of truly talented guys... With all due respect of course...

Only way to be 100% sure of the weather is a weather rock wet - raining, bright - sun shining, swinging - windy, white - snowing, missing? - tornado take cover.;) There were 4 MTS cars there, 1 told me he was so outclassed w/ these USAC powerhouses. he just wanted to run once w/ them.:31: I saw him pull off in the feature, Bares, Irwin, Steinbach, & Strpko were from MTS. One MTS racer said they didn't want to buy a tire just for one race.:deadhorse: There were2 from Canada Mahoney & Watson.:39: 1 from NRA/SOD group Dalman.:43:: I did enjoy the show & the track which I've had issues w/ in the past. All did a good job, track wasn't as dusty as in the past. :8::8::8::8:
