Knoxville

Why the early start time??? That's annoying. I thought this was supposed to be a throwback to the old days. Starting early is bad for track conditions. I started going there in 1979. Hot laps started when the sun was low enough in the sky. There was no set time. I'm just hoping for this to go over well and I know for a fact that all the locals expect hot laps at 6:45pm not 6:15. Why start early in July when its hot outside? Plus, only 2 classes instead of 3. Come on Knoxville. Give the non-wing cars a legit chance. Prepare the track right, and start at the usual time. Sure seems to me that there is some local push back to not get upstaged by the superior non-wing racing. Race director John Mc Coy and board member Mike Brooks are old school non-wing drivers that should know better. If they want non-wing cars to go over well they need to be all in! And Next year they should make this a points race for the weekly drivers. I think it's ridiculous they have their weekly show along with this event. These guys need to grow a pair and maybe check out Bobby Marshall's Facebook page and see when outlaws were real men. Oh well, hoping for an old school night at Knoxville when the track wreaked of manure. We'll see. 49 entries is damn good.

Instead of bashing a place for starting 30 minutes earlier maybe you should appreciate the fact they are hosting a high paying event for traditional sprint cars. I understand your concern to a certain extent but to bash the track prior to the event is shameful. There should be nothing but praise going to Knoxville, usac, and war for allowing such an event to take place for non wing cars. We don’t have a lot of crown jewel events that pay what they should and this is definitely a step in the right direction. With good crowd and driver support it will only get bigger. Appreciate what you are given don’t criticize what you can’t control.

Pre-race complaints about Knoxville Raceway. It's Official, I've heard everything. Somehow i believe this race will be run in an efficient manner with premium quality track conditions. Happy 4th.

Some folks are just never satisfied. We are heading out later today. It’s my first visit to the sprint car capital of the world and we don’t care what time they start, we will be there and be happy!! Safe travels to everyone.

Dirtfan 7/4/19 9:05 AM

Some of our Racing Families are en route as we speak. We've been looking forward to this since last year when it was announced.🏁🏁

flagboy55 7/4/19 9:37 AM

I put a post up yesterday with a couple thoughts on this event on the thread about questions on Corn Belt. I figured it would bring the thread back to the top but didn’t, oh well. Just a short recap Casey Shuman posted in that thread that it could be a one shot deal. I’m of the belief that this is very necessary for wingless sprint cars and I hope it’s a huge success. I’m disappointed that a couple other sanctions aren’t in on it, but I don’t want to debate that now. Having never been to the Sprint Car Capital of the World, this event has taken away my excuses for not going. Very much looking forward to it and will going west bright and early tomorrow. Looking forward to perhaps meeting a couple more of you and finally stepping foot on hallowed ground. My buddy Oppweld and myself will be there setting everyone straight about racing, music, and beer ;):32: To everyone that’s not going to make it, I wish you all a fun and safe weekend. Happy Independence Day!

“Engine warm-ups” are at 6:15. That is engine heat. Hot Laps start at 6:45.

dsc1600 7/4/19 11:11 AM

Hahaha, it’s as if there are 10 of these shows for non-winged sprints the way some people are complaining.

Way to catch and counter the pre-race whining Kirk. Hope your dad is getting better.

Did you remember to pack clean underwear in case you have to go to the Hospital? I wouldnt want that to happen and have the Hospital staff think your nickname is "Skid Marx" I heard one of your racing family couldnt go to Knoxville, and the way I understand it,its the family member that helps you pack.....

PS tell Mailman you wanna go to the Speedway Motors museum on early Saturday morning. There is time to do both if you plan carefully...

If you guys make the bonsi run to Lincoln and you like hot wings make your way to the "Watering Hole." I think there are 3 locations in Lincoln. They have the Best grilled hot wings by far I have ever eaten!

I have never been disappointed when stepping into the venue - or leaving.

Enjoy.

And.... Iowa usually has cheap gas prices. Kind of like "getting away" with something. :)

We’ve been looking forward to this race since it was announced. We just arrived in Iowa after a 9 hr drive and we will be there tomorrow and Saturday night. Everyone travel safely and enjoy the 4th of July!

Anyone at campsites at the track? Wondering how full it is already. I’m at Paragon and heading that way after race. Thanks for any info

flagboy55 7/4/19 9:34 PM

How’s the mosquitoes in Knoxville, do I need bug spray?

The campground just N of the track looked to be about 1/2 full or so when we drove by about 8:00PM. Emphasis on LOOKED TO BE! We didn’t drive in to see.

We walked around the track until about 7:45. No mosquitos, and if there is a mosquito within 100 miles it will bite my wife. I’d say you’re good.

Bad idea. Its a 3 1/2 hr. drive each way, if you don't stop at all. Even if you leave Friday nite, you'll be burnt out & hard up to enjoy Saturday racing.
This museum is DEFINITELY worth seeing, & its worth taking the time to do it right. Less than 2 hrs. there won't do it justice. They used to have ONLY guided tours, 2PM Monday thru Fri. only. When I was driving from Denver to the East Coast & back every summer, I missed the tour at least 3 times. Finally i looked thru the window, decided to get a motel, stay the nite & take the tour (Bob Mays was the guide.... ultra knowledgeable!) It was a good decision, definitely worth $$$ on motel & extra day
Don't know about the rib place in Lincoln, but Buzzard Billy's cajun restaurant is killa too. Check out the Zoo Bar if you like blues, often on weekdays as well as weekends :11;

Maybe its a bad idea in your view, but when you are that close, and dont get out that way much, and if you live in Indiana its probably 12 hours away, then it doesnt look to bad. Or maybe some of us are keener than others to do such things on the side.

I noted on another thread a few weeks ago to go there Saturday Morning. The museum is open from 9 to 1. To go there on a weekday like today, then no you wont have time to really enjoy the place, because the tours dont start till the early afternoon.

I recommended going there,as I have been there a few times myself over the years and its the best racing/hot rod museum I have been to........by far..........and I have been to a bunch of racing museums over the years.

Bottom line is this: If you plan ahead, you can go to Speedway Motors and tour their museum, and have plenty of time to get back to Knoxville and kick back a bit before going to the race.

Been here since Monday. Camped on grounds behind barns off 3&4. Filling up, but some spots still available with electric and some with water. $25 per night. Sure some at camp just to north of track.

We got here a little before 10 and able to get a spot. Looking forward to the racing.
