LPS changes...

I heard that starting today(Monday) the concession stand up on the hill is going to be demolished and then re-built. I guess we will see...

Spiker wasn't joking around... it sounds like he is definately taking the new job very seriously.

I have a few questions for some of the "old timers" or anyone that knows. I found some photos from 1999 taken by photographer Steve Hardin... http://www.stevehardin.com/htm/lincolnpark.htm Viewing the photos got me thinking and I wondered if some of you could share a little history about the track.

Was Buck Arnold the owner at LPS before the Farrar's had it? Was he the guy that built the concrete grandstands?

Does anyone have old photos of the LPS before 1999 or even before the concrete grandstands were built??

Does anyone have old race results for LPS?

Re: LPS changes...

What some may fail to remember is that LPS was once viewed as one of the premier weekly track for sprint cars (as opposed to wing sprint cars) in the nation - and it was a different world - Gas City was shuttered - Bloomington ran wings. I have track champions as well.

Yes, I remember the when the place packed... I grew up in Putnamville... I remember sneaking through a fence at the southwest corner of the 'old' pits (you know where all the old tires were piled up) and walking through a couple times.... it was always a packed house.

Please share the past champions. I know my good friend Brian Hayden was sprint car champion in 1996 and I believe rookie of the year in 1990... with Bill Rose being the RotY in 1989 The ROTY dates could be wrong.

As for what I heard... I am going to stop be the track today a see for myself what is being done.:6:

Now??? you already knew that... :2:

I stopped by the track... building is not being demolished... from what I saw, both restrooms have been cleaned and painted... they smell better. Definately better. The concession area is being given a major cleaning and looks like there getting ready to paint.

Eric Shively won a championship or two? Not sure of the years.

I've only been taking photos there for about six years, but this thread made me go back and check out some of the old photos. Pretty cool seeing who was driving what cars back in 2004 and the late model show from 2003. In 2004, I've got one of Bryan Clauson's first sprint car wins I think. Anyone who wants to check some of them out they are at: www.careyfoxphotos.smugmug.com

My uncle, Bob Butler used to be a photographer there a long time ago, I'd love to find some of his old photos back when they ran twice a weekend.

Great post!!

Re: LPS changes...

Brian's 1995 title at LPS was historically important because it impacted another driver - and ultimately changed racing history. Anybody remember how?

Bill Gardner 7/13/09 5:39 PM

Re: LPS changes...

Pat... the person you are referring to is Tony Stewart. The short version of the story is... Kent Christian qualified Brian's sprint car and put it in the show at Putnamville... Brian was driving a silver crown car at Indiana State Fairgrounds... Stewart crashed Glen Niebel's car and Brian gave up his ride to Stewart because the silver crown race was running late and he needed to get back to putnamville to win the championship.

Stewart later went on to win the Silver Crown championship by 2 pts.... and with that he won the USAC triple crown

Am I correct??? :2:

How old was Dave Darland in the eairly 90's the looked like he was a strong force then as he is 20 years later??

psullivan 7/13/09 5:51 PM

Re: LPS changes...

That's right Bill - Brian and Brad Marvel (Kent may have been in the mix as well) were locked in battle for the title (this again shows how big this was) Brian gave up the seat in Steve Stapp's Silver Crown car and Stewart was just tremendous (remember he was the 1994 midget champ - but it wasn't like he was a household name). I happened to be sitting by Pancho Carter and he was amazed by Tony's run forward as well - these points proved to be very critical because of the narrow margin Tony won the Silver Crown title (and hence, the Triple Crown) by after the remarkable and stunning turn of events that happened at the finale at Sacramento. Funny story - I flew to Sacramento with Dick Jordan - he had invented this board game which we played - I can't adequately describe it but the winner of the game was "Tony Stewart". I stuck that piece of paper in my pocket and afterwards I found it - so I placed it in the race program where it rests to this day.

Re: LPS changes...

Brian just walked in.. he told me he was driving Dave Lafevre's silver crown car and that the motor blew up while Stewart was driving it... That race earned him enough points that we was able to go on and win the championship by a couple points.

TRACK HISTORY 1969-1972 Kenny Farrand built and owned Lincoln Park as a quarter mile facility. 1973 Buck Arnold purchased the speedway and ran the race track through 1980. 1981 Mike and V. Farrar purchased LPS from Mr. Arnold and formed the facility basically into what is recognized by the fans when they come in today. The Farrar's ran LPS through the 1996 race season. 1997 Lincoln Park Speedway was purchased by Bill and Marlene Hopton of Terre Haute, Indiana. Over the years many changes have taken place, as well as many types of races and events. For example, in 1977 and 1978 former owner Buck Arnold built the concrete grandstands on the west side of the facility. From 1973-1978 races were run on Fridays and Sundays, with Non- Wing Sprints, Limited Late Models, Thunder Cars, and Late Models racing. In 1982 the Farrar's expanded the corner's by 20 ft. and increased the overall length to a 5/16ths mile track. In 1983 the Friday/Sunday racing schedule was changed to Friday/Saturday. 1986 was the last year for 2 nights with Saturday night becoming the regular weekly race night in 1987, except for special events. In 1984 figure 8's were run on Sunday evenings, and also in 1984 John Andretti won his first Sprint Car race of his career at any track. In 1985 a Late Model vs. Sprint Car Challenge was run with Bob Kinser (Sprint Car) winning over Charlie Sentman (LM). Also in 1980's LPS hosted Tractor Pulls and Spectator races. In 1987 Dave Darland won the Putnamville Clash in a borrowed car and uniform. 1987 also saw the introduction of the Modifieds replacing the Sportsman Class. Lincoln Park continued to support Non- Wing Sprint Car racing even as the trend was to go to the Winged- Sprints in the early 1990's. In 1991 Dave Darland won his 2nd straight Sprint Car Title, winning 9 of 16 events, (57%), Dirt Track Racing Workshop also started in 1991, . In 1992 the pit area was expanded, and Bob Kinser won his 7th Sprint Car title at the age of 61. 1993 found LPS completing a full season with no rain outs, and the parking area was expanded to handle continued large counts of cars and fans. In 1995 the pits and backstretch grandstands were added, bringing LPS to todays conditions. Since 1997 LPS has rejoined Indiana Sprint Week, a popular Indiana based week of nothing but great Non-Wing Sprint Car action in July of each year. USAC has come back to sanction many great events for Sprints and Midgets. In 1988, the Hut Hundred was conducted as LPS and Rich Vogler won for the 8th time, (a record). In 2000 the Annual 100 lapper returns to Lincoln Park for the Annual USAC Midget classic. As we race into the 2000 season, we find that Lincoln Park is still committed to racing Non-Wing Sprints on a regular weekly program along with the UMP Modifieds in 2000, to join our new class of Pro Stocks. Great Facility the we've come to love, along with the great competition that we've come to expect every Saturday night in three racing divisions. July 3 2009 Joe Spiker took over the track on a lease/purchase deal.IM NOT EVEN GETTING INTO THE EARLY 2000 YEARS YOU ALL KNOW WHAT HAPPENED

We used to love watching them roll out of their ride and go to work on a loaf of bread and a few pounds of bologna. They were some good guys. Friendly as heck.

Look at how many races were ran at LPS during 1983... I don't remember the races but I sure remember the sound every Saturday and Sunday night.
