Re: Funniest racing picture
Cripe is awsome. Its been sweet working with him this past month.

Looks like the universal one to go signal!:8:

Re: Funniest racing picture
Do we have an ID on that first photo, at The Mile? I've got the candidates whittled down to Chuck Booth, Merle Bettenhausen, Arnold Knepper, Jackie Howerton and Rollie Beale.
I know I could just go next door to my brother, The Open Wheel Encyclopedia, but that's cheatin. (though I'll do it if all else fails) |
Re: Funniest racing picture
I'm thinkin' Chuck Booth just based upon what little bit I can see of his helmet. Also, I can't quite see Arnie Knepper or Rollie Beale throwing the old one digit salute. :2: Gonna go check some old programs for a #44 at IFG.

Re: Funniest racing picture
Yeah, Booth is the most likely option.

Re: Funniest racing picture
I lost out on the bid for a photo, during either last or second to the last Outlaw show at San Jose, Ca. It was Steve Kent, wingless at Handford Ca. Going into turn one. He crossed up the car and there she went! MAN! those whites of his eye balls through the face shield! Oh my! Well it was not funny at the time. Yes, it was Selma Shell car. Don't remember if it was his first time without the wing. Who won that night don't remember but that crash will never be forgotten. 19 years ago.

Re: Funniest racing picture
It had to be the picture of the sprint car that was built inside of a mobile home. To get the car out, they had to take the side wall out of the mobile home.

Re: Funniest racing picture
Here is one borrowed from the HAMB message board on a sweet thread of vintage sprint car pictures.

Re: Funniest racing picture
and on the other side of the fence is Wally Meskowski, who I was working for and in front of him, my friend & photographer Dennis Torres. Awesome times racing.
Lynn ---------- Post added at 10:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:54 PM ---------- anybody have Daves Pitstop photo of last year at the Kokomo Klash winners circle. That showed the Peterbuilt crew with masks on. And Standbrough didn't have a clue what was going on behind him. Funny Winners circle photo. Lynn |
Re: Funniest racing picture
any 1 know the reason for the hand signals
|
Re: Funniest racing picture
The story I have heard on the hand signals is that the more that Wally flipped chuck off the harder he drove. I have tried this before and sometime it works. Here is a quote but the names have been removed to protect the guilty. "you just got passed by #$%@! (*&^!#!~ ***!" This quote from around 2006 by a fellow crew member of mine.
The pic from John Mahoney of I belive one of the caruthers sitting on J.P. Jr's shoulders while he is strapped in from the 70's is the funniest! Ahhhhh to be around when racing wasn't so damn SERIOUS! And any pic of Larry Rice and his silly ass hats are good to! Bob |

Re: Funniest racing picture
There's a photo out there somewhere similar to the Chuck Booth shot, in which Chuck Gurney (also in a dirt champ car) is passing someone and giving them the salute too. I looked for it on the net for a bit, but couldn't find it. I'm pretty sure I still have a copy on one of my old laptops. I'll look for it if no one else finds it.

Re: Funniest racing picture
Our first Indy car race in 89 at PIR mile. Mears in the Penz car had the field covered and lapping the back markers. A kid took him out because he didn't keep his line. Spun Mears out as he had his black gloved finger in the air. The first time seeing all 4 tires go pop! Sure miss those days.

You obviously have some information on this. So what is the rest of the story? Was Robert Bell fast?
