Re: Little 500

Well the 66th running of the "Greatest Short Track Race in the Land" is now complete. Though not quite as exciting as last years version, it still was an entertaining evening at Anderson Speedway. A number of contenders had issues early on with Aaron Pierce finding the wall before lap 60 that put him out of this years race. Also both Kyle Hamiton and Bryan Clauson were involved with lapped cars and were both down laps early in the race. A nice recovery for Hamilton as he was able to bring it home in 5th spot at the end.

Tony Elliott, Caleb Armstrong, Troy DeCaire, Brian Gerster and Chris Windom also found no luck at all and will finish much lower in the standings than where they were running. Donnie Adams Jr and Russ Gamester were also strong in the early going but again their finishing places won't reflect the solid drives they had. Shane Cottle had a good run going, leading a lot of the middle portion of the event, but again as last year the motor expired too soon.

A few other folks who did have good runs were Geoff Kaiser, Jo Jo Helberg and Hamilton with solid top 5 finishes. But the bulk of the money and the laurels go to the repeat winner in the 07 Wilson Racing machine of Jacob Wilson. The young man drove a masterful race after starting in the 5th position and let the race come to him. He was in the top 5 most of the night and seemed on cruise control much of the way. He was followed across the line on the lead lap by Jerry Coons Jr. in his "rookie" season at the Little 5. Hard to believe that the "Coondog" could ever be considered a rookie.

It was one of the larger crowds in recent history by my estimation. The quality of the field and great weather I'm sure helped entice a number of folks to check it out. The number of campers seemed to be larger this year than in past seasons as well. Speedway owner Rick Dawson mentioned before the race that there were people from New Zealand, Australia, England and every state in the US. Quite a gathering indeed.

So the record will show Jacob Wilson as the winner of the 66th Annual Little 500.:8::9: Congrats on a great drive.

Glad to see Danny "the old man" Smith had a solid race.

LocalYokel 5/25/14 3:46 AM

Congrats to Kyle Hamilton getting a top 5 in only his second time ever in a sprint car.

Btw... I'm a big Danny Smith fan, but that was some run Clauson had. It's too bad he had to tangle with a car that far down.

I am a big Clauson fan, but he must of dropped his gps to run over a lap car that early in a 500 lap race. while leading. Great run by Coons & Kyle Hamilton.

Did not take long to see who was their to win. Jacob Wilson/Eric Gordon outstanding from the start. They came to race 500 laps and did not how their hand until they needed too. Great Job. Was that Eric Geodon's 10 win as a owner/driver/race strategist?

bowbuild 5/25/14 9:37 AM

It was great seeing Jacob Wilson win his second little 500. The entire Wilson family works very hard with their racing program from go-karts years ago to the level they have achieved today. Jacobs name is the name we here at the track but behind the scenes I am sure brother Clinton is making things happen. Again congratulations to the Wilson family. Gb

Yup. 10 for Gordon. Congrats to the Wilson family and the entire crew, including IOWs own "Honest Sam" Brooks, now a 9 time champion of the Little 500 as a tire specialist.

Are you fricken kidding me? Were you there? Did you personally see what happened? I can tell you right now that you did NOT! Or else you wouldn't have written such an idiotic statement.
The first time Bryan was taken out by a lapped car while leading , he was on the outside of a car (#11) that should have blacked flagged at least 10 laps earlier. That car was out of control and hit Bryan in the LR, spun him and then with no car control, drove over his front end. And ultimately took himself out thankfully!
The second time he was taken out was again, another car that should have pulled in from being a mobile hazard! It's a big part of that race, but after you've been lapped 50 times, wouldn't ya get the hint!
Danny took Bryan out in turn 3 with a slip up and this time shot both of them into the wall and ended their nights. It was a shame! Bryan was flying! Making up ground from being taken out the first time while in the lead. I think he was back up to 4th?
That kid has never done anything but impress me with him ultimate talent. He is the real deal! He made no errors in dealing with those lapped cars. Too bad it happened to him twice last night. Nature of the beast of that race though.
I can't wait to see him at the speedway next year!

Bryan lost brakes quite a while before that.

The battle between him, cottle, and Wilson would have been pretty awesome to watch though if bad luck wouldn't have happened to two out of the three.

RacinBabe 5/25/14 10:46 AM

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the "extra curricular" activity that broke out on the apron of the front stretch between Chris Windom & Sexy Rexy Norris III especially since it appears our own Little Rube took a header over the barriers trying to save Windom from himself. :18: :44:

Re: Little 500

Would have been a better show without the #5 or if the right driver was in the car. Don't get me wrong, Hamilton is a good shoe but if I'd never seen him run before last night I would have thought it was his first time in a car. He had as good, if not better, equipment than the other 32 cars. Not one time did I see him make a clean pass. I'm not sure how many drivers he p***ed off last night, but there are a few. That move over flag is just that, respect the leader. I don't know, I'm sure others will think I'm wrong I've seen a lot of congratulating him on his nice run but that's not hard to do when you hit every car on the track.:6::6::6::14::42::

I have watched Kyle Hamilton over the past 10 years and have never witnessed him racing anyone rough. He is extremely talented and deserves more opportunities like this.

I had a pretty good angle looking into three when Clauson and Smith went in there. There was about 3 feet between them. Bryan had no brakes in traffic with 25 to go. His car got away from him and it rotated.

Danny had a warped lf rotor from early on in the night. Other than the incident involving Clauson I didn't see the 81 really rook anyone all night. He stayed down out of the way and was running 12th when he hit the wall.

I suppose its all one sees it. Maybe the car behind them had video and maybe it will magically appear on here.

Mrs.Goacher5g 5/25/14 8:52 PM

Danny smith is one is the cleanest race car drivers their is... He ran a clean race all night. And yes before anyone asks I was there all night.

RacinBabe 5/25/14 8:59 PM

Don't worry everyone!! I checked with Little Rube and he is relatively unhurt
and has no plans on pursuing a career in hurdling. Although if anyone does have a video others have expressed interest in seeing it for the replay of his mishap! :8:

KR_17 5/25/14 10:21 PM

Hey rockstar5 how about the two times cottle dumped him and the second time was after he just passed him clean after he had already spun him once, the kid was racing hard like the rest of the top guys out there and wanted to make the most of the opportunity that bob had givin him, and much as passing in lapped traffic was a factor you had to go for it somtimes and other guys were doing the same thing.

Yes I was their and seen him take him self out of the lead! Are you freaken kidding me? No pressure from behind and one lap car with 400 laps to go. Sorry! And People wonder why Eric Gordon Dominated this race. At least Aaron Pierce had pressure on him with his crash.
