I think it was 6 or 7 years ago my wife and I were headed to Bloomington and got word they cancelled due to excessive heat. I thought " what a crock, it is not that hot", and then I got out of the car in Shoals to get gas and opened the door right into a blast of heat that took my breath away. It would have been dangerous for people to be out in that heat too long and especially the fire/safety guys being suited up. It might not be popular, but sometimes it is too hot to race.

flagboy55 7/15/19 9:57 AM

Good points, especially since most of us fans are OLD! But the heat is not going to stop me from trying to make Plymouth and Kokomo. If I die from heatstroke, at least I went out doing what I loved!

I hear you Jimmy and when you are diabetic it just sucks the sugar right out of you.

It’s July, it’s going to be warm. Come race time, 7:00 it will be comfortable. With all the rain outs this year some warm weather is welcomed. Support your local tracks that give us a place to watch our favorite drivers entertain us.

Other than a few dangerous days at the end of this week, the weather forecast is good for Sprint Week. Especially compared to the rainy/stormy, spring/early summer we've all lived through this year. The 2 week period is drier overall and after Sunday the high temps are supposed to be dropping down into the mid to upper 80's. Just for the first few days get plenty of fluids, don't hang out in the sun too long prior to race time and hold off on beating your personal best in the drinking beer from a funnel contest, until next weekend.:)

Re: Indiana Sprint Heat

I am not diabetic, but I take blood pressure medications that make me sensitive to the sun, so extreme heat is a problem for me.
The biggest problem is parking. At several of the tracks, the handicapped parking is taken up by the sanctioning body or vendors. Then there are the motor homes that occupy six (at least) parking spaces by opening up their awnings and whatever. Wouldn't be so bad if they parked in a designated area as they do at TSS. At Bloomington, the motor homes often occupy the nearest parking spaces to the track.
Now I'm not intending to start a feud with the RVers, but as a regular patron of many of the venues that hold these races, I would like to be able to park within a reasonable distance to the grandstands. This has really become an issue this year as I am experiencing back problems that have severely limited my mobility.
I haven't checked the weather for next week, but if it is as Jerry Shaw says that will be a plus, as I am only planning to do the back half.
I hope that every race has a three-wide finish for the win and everyone has a good time, regardless of what you drive.
I just checked Accuweather for next week and it does look good!

Yep I know

Therealether 7/15/19 4:04 PM

The first promoter to cancel due to heat I shall send a pink purse and forever will refer to them as Mary.

ronmil 7/15/19 4:24 PM

We had temperatures over 110 degrees a few years ago and they ran. I remember going to a regular show at Bloomington and my car showed 112 at the intersection of 37 and 450.
I also remember them canceling when it was less than that. Every track canceled that weekend. Common sense needs to be the determining factor.

Adjust the start times to start at 8:30, use the power of social media to spread the word about the time change, and run the shows efficiently to be done by 11.

Finally someone with a solution instead of laying out all of the problems. This is a perfect idea. Start later and save people from the heat of the direct sun and save the racetracks. It’s a double win. I read where someone was critical of USACs resolve to run races and cancel quickly. If memory serves that got the ire of the race directors up. This would be a perfect opportunity to show they can run efficiently and deal with these circumstances. Also must explain to the tracks that these huge crowds came for sprint cars, not support divisions. I read all of the time these are some of the biggest crowds they get. So maybe cut it to one division like Usac events used to be. It’s going to be hot that’s a fact. Hydrate like you are supposed too. My first time out for ISW was 1999 and everyday we had temps in the high 90s. Everybody raced and we moved on. 20 years later it’s the same all over again. It can be done.

USAC doesn't schedule support classes the tracks do. I agree though. I think the people who have suggested starting later have the right idea. The only problem I see is with time zone we are in it doesn't start cooling off until after 10. As for me, I will go anyway. I would be working out in the heat anyway. Guarantee I will be more comfortable at the races. I am 56, diabetic and a stroke survivor, so I can definitely relate to all who have concerns. Remember the time to hydrate is before you go out in the heat. Then drink plenty to stay hydrated. This time of year I try to drink at least a gallon of water every night. Everybody have fun and stay safe.

Cooling towels really work. I use them mowing. Wet them, wring them out and wear them on your neck. Usually last a couple hours or so.

I have the DPC "Soaker Hat" from JCPenney online. Use it for all hot day activities. Keeps me cool for 3-4 hours and I find a faucet to re-soak the hat to keep on cooling. Got mine online but they may be in stores, too. Be safe and let's go racing!

Would everyone be willing to pay $5 more at the gate to eliminate the support classes?

hoosier race fan 7/15/19 8:20 PM

Re: Indiana Sprint Heat

Plymouth, Gas City, Kokomo, and Lawrenceburg all have just 1 support class this week. Not sure why there is discussion of any more than that. The classes scheduled would also make it easy to run a show from 8:30-11. None of them will draw that many cars but will provide time for the sprints to have a short break between their events.

Al Pierce 7/15/19 8:31 PM

Terre Haute, Lincoln Park, Bloomington, and TSS all have one support class.

I’d be willing to 5$ more at the gate to get these teams some money. They put on the show that attracts people to come, not the sanctioning body.

Kirk Spridgeon 7/15/19 9:14 PM

Indiana Sprint Week races haven’t had more than one support class in quite a few years. It is part of the deal.

Sure wish all Usac events were that way. Kind of what makes it special.

you’ve posted in at least two threads on the subject. we hear you, you don’t like it.

Are you on vacation tomorrow though? because it’s after 10pm on a work night and you’re still posting. Thought getting rest before the next work day was paramount to your daily existence or something ?

Non wing lover 7/16/19 6:20 AM

Al I think gas city and kokomo also one support not sure about Plymouth or the burg btw for the second year I like to give a shout out welcome to.plymouth for coming on board for usac sprint week all I ask where do they possibly park all the fans? Did they acquire more land for.parking it's been a few years since I've been to the playground of power the wife's job keeps us from going not her fault only got so much vacation time as I'm sure everybody on this post can relate too unless your retired or disabled like myself

Non wing lover 7/16/19 6:28 AM

Therealether 7/16/19 7:31 AM

That's how I felt. Mind you, I don't live in IN these days, I live in Florida and out heat index the past few weeks has been over 110. You know what we did? Put on our boots and worked through it lol

PJ Wright 7/16/19 8:07 AM

I always soak a washcloth, wring it out, put it in a zip lock bag and put it in my cooler. A few times a night I wipe my face and it sure feels good. Like others have said, hydrate in advance.

Early start time....late start time....one support class...multiple support classes....Here's a thought...how about we celebrate and appreciate the fact that we have the opportunity to see 8 races in 10 days?!? As Bill would say, "Go to a track and enjoy. Try watching the race like you'll never see another one. I promise you will enjoy." I know I will!

I gurantee it will be past 10 pm when the races are over

Well said Mrs.G .. we really dont know how good we have it. If the races are over too late, dont go. If its too hot for you, dont go.But I for one am glad they moved the time up for everyones general health . If you are a warrior that works and lives in this kind of heat, good on ya, but just know that everyone is different and to go or not is a personal choice that each person must make for themselves. At least we have the chance to make that decision. Peace

hoosierboy3 7/16/19 12:14 PM

I’m on second shift and working the weekends right now. What I would do to be able to attend just one of the sprint week races, no matter the time or temperature

You’re prolly dang near 100% correct there. My take though is that when there’s a special event happening, the american consumer will sacrifice a night (or two) of rest to take part. Sunday/ Monday night Football, concerts, video game releases... etc. IMHO Indiana Sprint Week is on that level +1.

I’m sure the good folks that run these tracks and the USAC officials were already working on this well before I said anything. Smart move on their part in my opinion, and I hope everyone that can go has a great time. Good luck to all the drivers and teams, have a safe week and run your ass off.
